“I’m sorry,” I said and felt tears rising up from my heart. “I’m so sorry.”
“Do you have anything else to say?” she asked.
My face flushed hot like a hot wind blowing through my pores. I heard my heart pounding, felt it pounding in my chest. I sat there for a very long time trembling with the whole group staring at me, with Mike giving me a gentle nod as he stared at me. I felt like my heart was going to pound out of my chest. I saw an image of the redheaded woman’s skeleton face right before my face, screaming, “DON’T YOU DARE TELL!”
I squeezed the coverlet so hard that my fingers began to ache. Finally, I risked a sentence. “I don’t know if I can,” I whimpered.
“Try,” Gretchen said softly.
All eyes were on me. I looked around the room, feeling like I was on trial, feeling like I was
