Chapter 30: In My Heart

1286 Words
After lunch, Jessica entered Roger's office without knocking. Roger was sitting in his chair, waiting patiently for Jessica; however, he frowned when he noticed her low spirits. "What's wrong?" Roger stopped working, with his hands crossed on the table. Jessica looked up at him weakly. She seemed to agonize over something. "Nothing…It's just that almost everyone knows about 'us' now", Jessica motioned between her and Roger.       Roger could probably imagine the changes in these hours considering how everyone was gawking at them. "But isn't that a good thing? Hopefully, no one is going to bother you now that you are with me?" Jessica felt a thrill run through her body. How had things changed so quickly between them? Just a few days ago, Roger was reaffirming his hatred for her and now within an hour, he was okay with everyone knowing their status? Jessica was shocked yet exhilarated. Were her wishes finally coming true?   Not wanting to express her emotions to Roger, Jessica looked down forlornly.  "I don't think so. I think it's not going to be so easy for everyone to adapt to it." While speaking, Jessica lay on the office desk at will, blinking innocently and looking at him, "Do you know what the funny thing is?" Roger shook his head. Jessica said, "You became a bad person," she taunted.  Roger smirked and nodded, understanding what she was getting at. "Is it because my wife is such a bad woman? So now I am too?" Jessica smirked and nodded.  It was true that Roger was proud and arrogant who had always taken care of his reputation. So, when he said the next few words, Jessica was surprised.  "So what? What is wrong with that? I do not care!"      Jessica raised her eyebrows. "You really do not care?" Roger saw Jessica leaning on the chair with no expression. "You don't agree with my words?" Jessica smiled at him falsely and nodded slightly, "No, I agree. I am…just afraid." The two were silent for a moment, and Jessica thought why he had called her over to his office in the first place.  "By the way, why did you call me here?" asked Jessica. Roger was about to speak when Jessica interrupted him. She leaned forward on the table towards Roger. "Wait a minute. Whatever you are going to say, please do not let me go back out! I really cannot stand the attention of those people outside. Please take me in for an afternoon. I promise to clean your office spotlessly." Jessica begged.       Roger did not nod or shake his head, just keeping a poker face after hearing her words. She knew that it was very difficult to communicate with him. The Roger she knew before would only help her if the sun came out from the West and set in the East.  Noticing Roger not saying anything in response, Jessica sighed. "Fine, you go first," said Jessica.      Roger still gazed at Jessica with an expressionless face. Who was this woman in his life? Why did she always easily challenge the limit of his patience even though no one else could? "I have a question for you." Roger simply stated. "Yes?" "I am noticing that you are not as weak as you portray yourself to be. Why is that?" Roger stared at her, waiting for her answer. Jessica looked weak, but Roger knew this was a farce. Every time he tortured her, she never fought back. Was she trying to attract his attention? Was she trying to make him feel sorry for her?      Jessica knew what he meant. He was right. She could have fought back all those times, but she chose not to. Jessica looked down at her lap, twiddling her thumbs. Her anxiety was full force.   "Because…because you are so rich. I was afraid if I fought back, you would do something and I would not be able to afford it…" Jessica trailed off.        Roger chuckled and smiled. He stood up gracefully from the black leather chair and walked towards Jessica leaning on the table right beside her. Jessica focused on his hands which were currently in the pockets of his well-cut handmade limited-edition trousers. She slowly looked up and stared at his eyes which were boring into Jessica.      "You want to know what I think?" Roger's voice was like velvet. "I think you were unwilling to beat me because you wanted…more." Jessica gasped lightly, her heartbeat accelerating while her face flushed in embarrassment. He was right. Absolutely f*****g right.        Jessica laughed awkwardly. "Boss, you are really thinking too much. I was actually afraid of hurting you which is why I held back," Jessica replied with a flip of her hair trying to add a joking factor into their conversation. She flattered him with a bubbly smile. If she admitted to what he said, she would have nowhere to run.      Roger was skeptical of her words. Her blinking eyes and bright smile told him that she was guilty, but he could not see through what she wanted to hide.  All of a sudden, just as Jessica was about to get up and leave the room that made her difficult to breathe, Roger's strong-arm completely entrapped her in the chair. Before she could react completely, his warm lips were already clinging to her slightly opened mouth.      She stared at him, her heart pounding loudly, almost thumping out of her chest. His soft lips were so skillful, maneuvering through her open lips and gaining entrance in her mouth, his tongue feeling every corner of her mouth.   "What…what are you doing?" Jessica managed to ask breathlessly in between the passionate kiss.  Roger licked his lips and answered calmly, "Kissing you." His voice was husky and throat dry. He was aware of the changes Jessica's lips brought to his body so he pulled back and cleared his throat putting some space between them. While still facing away from Jessica, he spoke lightly. "Is your worry true when I was trapped in the elevator?"      This was the reason why he had asked her to come over to his office. There were some things that he wanted to know but he did not have time to guess.      Jessica thought the question was valid. "It is simple. If you want to think it is true, it is true." Roger turned around but Jessica had already stood up from her chair; they stared at each other. "I want to hear your answer," Roger spoke softly.      Jessica felt a little guilty for her shoddy answer, especially when he was staring at her this way, being so genuine.  "To be honest, I was really worried…I thought…" Jessica looked down and swallowed. Should she really tell him how she had felt? Should she reveal what was in her heart?  Roger forced her to finish her words, "You thought what?" He urged softly. Jessica shook her head hard. "Nothing, just... you are fine, that is all that matters." "Jessica..." Roger called her name softly. Jessica wanted to peel her gaze away from his deep soulful eyes, but she was afraid to do so. It was as if his eyes had captured hers and she was unable to move away. She was afraid he could see through her guilty farce. "What?" Jessica whined. Roger stared at her, with the vigilance against her all along in his eyes. His eyes hardened for a second before he reminded her word by word, "You are the most unqualified person in the world to worry about me and care about me. Don't forget how you put me in a crushing disaster overnight three years ago!"
