The abandoned territory to the north was dark and damp.

Bone-chilling cold seeped in through the walls.

The old wounds on my body ached dully from the cold.

Suddenly, footsteps sounded from the doorway.

Lina sauntered in, wrapped in that oversized cloak.

No trace of the council hall's timidity remained on her face.

"To think the strongest female warrior of the Bloodmoon Pack would be reduced to such a state."

I lifted my gaze and looked coldly at this clown before me.

"Get out."

Suppressed rage churned in my throat.

Instead of leaving, Lina pressed even closer, emboldened.

"Do you know why Kalen fell in love with me at first sight?"

Her smile looked exceptionally twisted in the dim light.

"Because the Moon Goddess told him that the Omega with the cool scent of pine forests is his true fated mate. And you are nothing but a crude shield."

The fury in my chest instantly ignited. I shot to my feet and closed the distance.

My wolf snarled, "Rip out her throat!"

My wolf's eyes had already turned a bloodthirsty scarlet.

Just then, steady footsteps came from outside the door.

A hint of cunning instantly flashed in Lina's eyes.

She suddenly let out a piercing scream.

She threw herself heavily against the corner of the table behind her.

A large gash instantly split open on her forehead.

Blood streamed down her cheek.

A tall figure burst into the room.

Kalen scooped Lina up from the ground, gathering her limp form into his arms.

"What happened?!"

Lina leaned weakly against his broad chest.

"Don't blame Eve. I fell by accident. She didn't push me."

This transparent attempt to cover things up was like adding fuel to the fire.

An iron grip instantly clamped around my neck.

He lifted me clean off the ground.

"I warned you not to touch her!"

Suffocation surged madly through my skull.

My legs flailed weakly.

There was not a trace of former affection in Kalen's cold eyes.

Only murderous intent that couldn't wait to be rid of me.

He slammed me against the ice-cold wall.

My insides felt as if they had shifted out of place, and a coppery tang welled up in my throat.
