Chapter 4

"That damned impostor! s*******r them all!" The wolf spirit let out a low growl in my mind. I suppressed the restless wolf spirit within me and tightened my thin cloak. Now was not the time. The wind and snow cut painfully against my face, and the snow underfoot crunched dully. I knew Lina would never let me leave this forest alive. Sure enough, I had barely walked two miles past the territory boundary when faint rustling drifted from the woods behind me. It was the sound of wolf claws stepping on fallen leaves. Three massive gray wolves lunged from the shadows, blocking my path. They were Kalen's most loyal Betas, now turned into Lina's lackeys. "My apologies, Eve." The lead gray wolf let out a low, threatening rumble from his throat. "Lina says only the dead can keep secrets forever." The secret he spoke of was naturally about Lina's scent. Lina was not an Omega at all. She was merely a defective reject who couldn't even shift into wolf form. I had no idea what she had used to fake my scent. And that fool Kalen had actually fallen for her deception. "Just the three of you?" I gave them a cold, sweeping look, without even the urge to transform. "Eve, you have lost the pack's protection. You are nothing but a stray dog now!" Another gray wolf couldn't hold back and lunged. Sharp fangs snapped toward my throat. I sidestepped the fatal blow and grabbed him by the scruff. With a forceful slam, his massive form crashed heavily onto a rock covered in snow and ice. Bones snapped with sickening clarity in the silent night. The other two gray wolves immediately closed in from both sides. Sharp claws ripped through my cloak, leaving bloody streaks across my back. I didn't transform. I faced all three gray wolves single-handedly in nothing but my human form. Five minutes later, the three massive wolves lay limp in the snow, twitching uncontrollably. I pinned their heads underfoot, swept my blade across their throats, and three heads fell at once. I pulled back, stepped over the bloodstains on the ground, and walked north without looking back. The sky to the north glowed with an eerie dark red. That was the direction of the Shadow Wolf Pack's territory. Back then, to save the dying Kalen, I had sealed away the power of the Shadow Wolf Alpha within me. Willingly, I sheathed my claws and fangs to become a nameless killing machine in the Bloodmoon territory. Now, this foolish loyalty was finally over. The wind and snow grew heavier, nearly burying all traces. Just as I was about to cross the border into Ultima Thule, a drawn-out wolf howl sliced through the night sky. Immediately after, hundreds of Shadow Wolves overran the border of Ultima Thule. They surrounded me, dense as countless stars. Leading them was a pure black giant wolf, its frame a size bigger than an ordinary Alpha's. He halted before me and slowly lowered his proud head.
