Chapter 4: A Little Too Close
Zara had started noticing things about Kai.
The way he looked at her when he thought she wasn't paying attention.
The way his voice softened whenever he said her name.
And, most dangerously, the way she had started looking forward to seeing him.
She didn't like that.
Not one bit.
Zara had spent too much time protecting herself to suddenly let someone become important to her.
Yet somehow, Kai was making it difficult.
That afternoon, she sat across from him at a quiet café, slowly stirring her drink while he watched her with an amused smile.
“What?” she finally asked.
Kai raised an eyebrow. “Nothing.”
“You've been staring at me for five minutes.”
“Have I?”
“Yes.”
He leaned back in his chair. “Maybe I'm trying to understand you.”
Zara laughed softly. “Good luck with that.”
“I don't need luck.”
His confidence made her smile despite herself.
“You're very sure of yourself.”
“Only when I'm right.”
“And you're always right?”
“No.”
She looked at him suspiciously. “That's surprising.”
Kai smiled.
“I'm wrong about one thing.”
“What?”
“I thought you didn't know how to smile.”
Zara's smile disappeared immediately.
“Then you weren't paying attention.”
“I am now.”
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Something shifted between them.
The teasing disappeared.
Kai's eyes remained on hers, and Zara suddenly became aware of how close they were sitting.
She looked away first.
“I should go.”
Kai didn't stop her.
Instead, he simply said, “I'll take you home.”
“I can drive myself.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you insisting?”
“Because I want to.”
Zara looked at him.
There was something disarming about the simplicity of his answer.
No pressure.
No explanation.
Just a quiet decision to be there for her.
She nodded.
“Fine.”
Outside, the evening air was cool.
As they walked toward the car, Zara suddenly stopped.
Kai turned around.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
But her expression had changed.
For a brief second, something from her past had flashed across her mind.
A place.
A voice.
A memory she had buried so carefully.
Kai noticed.
“Zara?”
She forced a smile.
“I'm fine.”
He studied her face but didn't push.
“Okay.”
They continued walking.
When they reached the car, Kai opened the passenger door for her.
Zara hesitated before getting in.
“Thank you.”
Kai smiled.
“For what?”
“For not asking.”
His expression became serious.
“When you're ready to tell me, you will.”
Zara looked at him for a long moment.
And for the first time in a very long time, she wondered what it would feel like to trust someone completely.
She quickly pushed the thought away.
That was dangerous.
Very dangerous.
As Kai drove, neither of them spoke much.
But the silence wasn't uncomfortable.
It felt strangely peaceful.
And Zara realized something that frightened her more than her past ever had.
She was beginning to feel safe with him.
And safety was the one thing she had promised herself never to mistake for love.
But perhaps...
She was already too late.
