Chapter 3

802 Words
Two infants less than a day old had crossed half of Mistwick and appeared silently on my bed. No one had helped them, and there were no signs of intrusion. Looking at their innocent, pure smiles, the fear in my heart was gradually replaced by a strange tenderness. Leon was right. They truly weren't ordinary humans. Even without the wolf clan's mark, they were anything but ordinary beings. I sighed in resignation and reached out to draw them into my arms. "Since I can't abandon you, then I will hide you away for the rest of my life," I murmured. I dialed the housekeeping agency. "I want to hire the most discreet nanny. Name your price," I said. From today onward, I had to guard against not only Leon, but the entire wolf clan. I hired Penelope at top dollar. She was deaf and mute, efficient in her work, and most importantly, unable to leak complex information to outsiders. The days were miraculously peaceful for two weeks. The two children were exceptionally easy to care for. They never cried at night. When hungry, they would quietly suck on their pacifiers. However, their appetites were astonishingly large. At barely two weeks old, they could drink an adult's daily milk supply in one go. Not only that, their strength was inhumanly strong. That day, when Penelope was changing the older brother's diaper, he swatted his tiny hand and left a dent in the pure steel railing of the crib. Penelope was so frightened her face turned pale, and she signed in terror to ask me what was going on. "That was substandard steel. We bought a fake," I lied without batting an eye. I clearly knew this wasn't normal. But I kept telling myself, as long as there were no golden scales, as long as there were no totem marks, they were human. Until an urgent call from George completely shattered my denial. "Madam, something terrible has happened," George stammered over the phone, his voice shaking uncontrollably. "The boss didn't believe the children were dead at all." I shot up from my seat, knocking over the water glass on the table. "What did you say?" I demanded. "The boss went to the wolf clan's forbidden grounds in Crystallia and retrieved the 'Pure Blood Antibody.' He planned to conduct blood screenings on all newborns on the night of the full moon. As long as they carried wolf clan blood, the antibody would draw out their true totem." George swallowed hard before continuing. "If an ordinary human infant came into contact with that antibody... every blood vessel in their body would burst on the spot, killing them instantly." The phone slipped from my hand and hit the floor with a thud. That madman Leon. He'd rather kill a thousand innocents than let one guilty person escape. If he discovered that my children were not only alive but also anomalies without any wolf clan characteristics, he would personally tear them into pieces. I had to find substitutes. That night, I walked alone into the largest underground black market in Mistwick. In that basement reeking of blood and decay, I traded the last diamond necklace my mother left me for a pair of wolf clan twins who had just lost their parents. They had distinct golden vertical pupils, and their backs were prominently marked with the black gang's pure-blood totem. I hid my real children in the basement of the apartment and returned to the family manor with these substitutes. The moment I stepped through the door, an overwhelming chill washed over me. Leon sat on the luxurious leather sofa, toying with a blood-stained silver dagger. Hearing footsteps, he slowly raised his head. His golden vertical pupils gleamed with bloodlust in the dark. "Darling, where did you go?" he asked. He stood up and advanced on me, step by step. His tall frame swallowed me in shadow. His gaze passed over me, locking onto the stroller behind me. "I heard you brought back two children," Leon said, lowering his head and leaning over the stroller to sniff the babies inside. His brows furrowed instantly. "Strange," he said, raising his eyes to pin me with a knife-sharp gaze. "Why don't they smell like you?" Cold sweat instantly drenched my back. "They... they just had a bath, and I rubbed baby oil on them," I stammered. Leon let out a cold laugh. The pure silver dagger in his hand slammed into the wooden table beside the stroller. The blade sank in more than halfway, sending wood splinters flying. "Sophia, you'd better not be lying to me," he said, pulling out the dagger and tapping my cheek with the flat of the blade. "If any problems are found during tomorrow night's bloodline test... I'll show you a fate worse than death."
