Kate's POV I woke up drowning. That was how the dream had ended. Black water sliding over my face, a sluggish mechanical weight dragging me down by the shoulders, my own lungs refusing to work. I came back to the white duvet of the hotel bed with my fingers clawed into the comforter and my heart hitting my ribs like it was trying to get out. For a long time I just sat there, breathing. Trying to remember how the dream had started. Trying, and failing, to remember why it felt so familiar. Then the pain started. Not in my chest. Below my left shoulder blade. A small, sharp, localized sting, as if something had been pressed against that square of skin in the night and left a bruise behind. I twisted my arm back to reach it. The angle was wrong.
