check mate

The flame from Zander’s silver lighter danced dangerously close to the warped edges of the ledger. The reflection of the fire flickered in the wide, panicked eyes of the lead mercenary. Landon stood rigid beside me, a sharp, slow grin spreading across his face as he realized what I was doing.I was bluffing about the automatic digital upload—we hadn't had the time to scan every single page—but the raw, unblinking conviction in my eyes told them I had absolutely nothing left to lose. And a girl with nothing to lose is a billionaire’s worst nightmare."Stand down," the leader sharply ordered his men, his voice losing its robotic calm. He held up a hand, keeping his eyes locked onto the flame. "Miss Montgomery, let's not be reckless. If you destroy the original document, the digital copies will only trigger an investigation. It won't protect you.""It won't protect Charles Sterling either," I shot back, my hand steady, the heat of the flame warming my cold fingers. "An investigation is more than enough to freeze his assets, halt the Silverlake expansion, and drag his name through the mud before he can ship Zander off to Switzerland. Call him. Now."The leader hesitated, his jaw clenching. Slowly, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, dialing a single-digit speed dial. He spoke in low, clipped whispers, his back turned to us.The diner was dead silent except for the frantic beating of my heart and the rain hammering the glass roof. My mom watched me from the booth, tears streaming down her face, completely stunned by the version of her daughter standing before her. After a grueling minute, the leader turned back around. He held the phone out toward me, his expression grim. "He wants to speak to you."I didn't lower the lighter. I stepped closer, letting Landon hold the phone to my ear while my left hand kept the flame anchored just centimeters away from the legal deeds. You are a remarkably expensive problem, Miss Montgomery," Charles Sterling’s gravelly voice boomed through the receiver, sounding cold, distant, and deeply venomous. "You think you've cornered me with a few sheets of paper?""I don't think, Mr. Sterling. I know," I said, my voice cutting through the line like a razor. "You're going to call off the audit on my brother's medical funds. You're going to reinstate my scholarship at Silverlake Prep under a permanent, un-reviewable clause. And most importantly... you are going to call Vanguard Academy and order them to return Zander to Silverlake High by tomorrow morning."A harsh, humorless laugh erupted from the phone. "And why would I agree to give my rebellious son back his playground?""Because if you don't, I let this paper burn," I whispered, leaning in close to the receiver. "The digital files will hit the Federal Trade Commission and the State Board of Education within ten seconds. Your hedge funds will collapse by closing bell tomorrow, and your name will be permanently ruined. You wanted to see how loud I would roar inside your golden cage, Mr. Sterling? Take a good look at your empire, because I am fully prepared to burn it down just to get the King back."The silence on the line was heavy, suffocating, and prolonged. For the first time in his life, the billionaire was calculating the price of absolute defeat."The transfer from Vanguard is already authorized," Charles whispered, the sheer venom in his tone enough to make the line crackle. "The audit is dropped. Your scholarship stands. But hear me well, girl. You and my son might have won this round, but you have just inherited a war you are not prepared for.""I survived your son, Mr. Sterling," I said, a dark, victorious smile finally breaking across my lips. "Your war doesn't scare me."I nodded to Landon, who slammed the end-call button. The lead mercenary didn't say another word. He flicked his fingers, signaling his men, and the three gray-suited enforcers marched out of The Greasy Spoon without looking back. A few seconds later, the heavy rumble of their luxury SUVs faded into the rainy night. The lighter snapped shut. Click. The flame vanished, and my knees instantly buckled. Landon caught my arm, steadying me as I finally let out a ragged, gasping breath. The heavy black varsity jacket felt like a shield that had successfully carried me through gunfire. Aria!" my mom cried, lunging out of the booth and throwing her arms around me, pulling me into a fierce, trembling hug. "Oh my god, Aria... what did you do? What is happening?""It's okay, Mom," I whispered, burying my face in her shoulder as the tears finally came, hot and relieving. "It's over. We're safe. Leo is safe."Landon walked over, running a hand through his damp hair, looking at the warped black binder on the table with an expression of pure awe. "You actually checkmated Charles Sterling, Aria. I didn't think it was possible.""I didn't do it alone," I said, wiping my face and looking down at the silver lighter in my hand. The next morning, the coastal fog had completely cleared, leaving Silverlake Prep bathed in a brilliant, blinding autumn sunlight.I walked up the grand stone steps, wearing my tailored uniform, the black varsity jacket open and slung carelessly over one shoulder. The courtyard was packed, the students watching me with an entirely new level of reverence. I was no longer a pariah. I was the girl who had broken the administration.I pushed open the doors to AP English Literature and walked down the third row. I pulled out the chair by the window and sat down, pulling out my notebook.Ten minutes into the lecture, the heavy wooden door of the classroom swung open. The air in the room instantly shifted, turning electric and thick. A tall, broad-shouldered boy walked in. He wore his white dress shirt completely unbuttoned at the collar, his silk tie slung loosely around his neck, his dark hair messy and perfectly framing a pair of piercing, ice-gray eyes.Zander Sterling. He didn't look at the teacher. He didn't look at the crowd that had instantly gone dead silent. He walked straight down the aisle until he stopped right in front of my desk.He looked down at me, his gaze tracking the varsity jacket on my shoulders, before landing on my face. A slow, incredibly handsome, and utterly ruthless smirk spread across his lips. "I believe you're in my seat, sweetheart," Zander murmured, his voice a low, smooth rumble that sent a thrilling jolt of pure adrenaline straight through my veins.I looked right back up into his icy gray eyes, a confident, matching smirk tugging at my own lips as I clicked my dollar-store pen once."I don't see your name on it, Sterling," I whispered back.Zander let out a low, dark laugh, reaching down to grab the back of my chair, leaning in until his lips were inches from mine, his possessive heat completely enveloping me."It doesn't need my name on it," Zander whispered, his gray eyes flashing with a beautiful, chaotic fire. "Because the King is back. And the Queen is exactly where she belongs."
