Chapter 5 A Hard-Learned Reality

681 Words
"Consider this your wake-up call. I really hope it sticks." Simon turned on his heel and strode away, leaving me with nothing but the memory of his unforgiving silhouette. "Mom, I'm so sorry. It's all my fault, I've been such a disappointment." Tears streaked down my cheeks as I bent low before the urn, the fresh bandage on my arm steadily soaking through with blood. I was too overwhelmed to care. Time became a blur as I finally dragged myself out of the cemetery, booking a flight for that same evening with a few taps on my phone. There was nothing left tethering me to this place. At home, I set about packing with determination. Anything Simon had given me was ruthlessly tossed into the garbage. Once I had gathered my important documents, I wheeled my suitcase to the door, ready to leave it all behind. But just as I reached the bottom of the stairs, a sudden assault left me utterly defenseless, a cloth pressed firmly against my mouth and nose. In no time, darkness closed in, pulling me into unconsciousness. When I came to, it was inside a coarse burlap sack. My hands and feet were tightly bound, and tape muffled my cries. Panic settled in, chilling me to the bone. Just then, a voice echoed from somewhere ahead. "Sweetheart, how often must I explain? Chloe meant nothing. She was only there in your absence. My love belongs to you and only you. You're having our baby. Please don't be upset. Punish me if you must, but don't turn your back on me." Michelle's voice trembled with a mix of desperation and conviction. "You're a liar! You swore eternal love to me, yet you replaced me the minute I was away. When you were doing it with her, who was truly on your mind?" "Always you. Every moment with Chloe, you were my sole thought. That's the only reason I could be with her. Everything I am, body and soul, is yours alone." Every word sliced through me as icy dread crept into my veins. My vision clouded over, as if I were being pulled under by a relentless tide. Rage, disgrace, and intense loathing rose like a firestorm within me. I clenched my teeth against the sharp sting of my tongue, the metallic tang of blood saturating my senses. Soon enough, the restraints were gone, and I was dragged to face Michelle. Her eyes were puffy and red, intensely focused on me. "Chloe, are you satisfied with yourself?" she challenged. My throat felt parched. "No, I'm not." Had I known from the get-go who Simon truly was, realized that I was merely a substitute, I'd have never let things escalate. Life, however, offers no second chances. "You've likely eavesdropped on the conversation," Michelle continued, "but I want to hear it from you. Who do you suppose Simon will pick, you or me?" Before I could answer, Michelle shoved me violently. Behind was a steep staircase threatening a painful descent. Panic-stricken, I clutched at Michelle's arm instinctively. In a blur, Simon dashed forward, enfolding Michelle in his arms while shoving me aside. I tumbled down, my body overwhelmed by excruciating pain, as if a car had struck me. Yet, the worst agony radiated from my abdomen. Sprawled on the floor, warmth seeped down from my lower body. With dwindling strength, I stretched out my arm. "Simon, save our baby." For a brief second, Simon's eyes flickered toward me, but Michelle's plaintive murmur broke through. "Honey, my stomach hurts." His fear spiked, and he whisked her into his arms, vanishing without a backward glance. My vision dimmed as blood pooled beneath me. ***** Simon raced Michelle to the ER, where an exhaustive assessment revealed no critical injury. Watching over Michelle until she drifted to sleep, his mind flashed unbidden to the picture of me, motionless and broken. His gut twisted with foreboding. Driven by an inexplicable urgency, Simon climbed into his car, headed back to the villa. Yet, stepping inside plunged him into chaos. What met his eyes was unfathomable!
