“So,” I started, looking out of the car’s window and onto the trees we passed. “What are we?” “Humans?” he deadpanned, slowly transitioning back to his usual self. Dumbass. “I meant, are we . . . dating?” I said, the last word seeming to be stuck on my throat and I looked away, my ears red and my cheeks hot. He chuckled at this. “No. We’re not.” I turned to him with my eyebrows creased, confused again about his behavior. Why is everything about him just seems to be perplexing in every sense of the word?
