Ultrasound

1334 Words
Lexi Pov Caroline and her had arrived at the hospital almost thirty minutes ago, and now they sat waiting for her name to be called. She really didn't want to be around this many people, especially not so many happy couples with growing baby bumps. She was there with someone her father hired and was paying. Would Caroline even be her friend if she wasn't being paid to do so? She wished she could have just stayed home and live the rest of her life in seclusion. "Ms. Coscove," A nurse had called. "Did you want me to go in with you, Lexi?" Caroline asked, placing a reassuring hand on her arm. "Please," That was all that Lexi could get out. She was happy Caroline was there and, regardless if it was just for the money or not, she needed her now, so she was happy she was there and didn't care about her reasoning. The two followed the nurse through a series of corridors, the place was like a maze, at least it did in Lexi's nervous brain. "Ms. Coscove could you follow me so we can get your weight and a urine sample please, and ma'am, you can wait just there in the ultrasound room. Lexi followed the nurse and stepped onto the scale just like she was asked. The nurse wrote her weight down while frowning. "Is something the matter?" Lexi asked. "Your doctor will discuss everything with you after the ultrasound, but you are severely underweight, especially being almost two months pregnant, and you weigh less than your previous medical charts state. It's a bit of a concern." Lexi was glad that the nurse told her that she hated the standardization the doctor would tell you. Why, if you know something, just tell me. Don't cause extra anxiety if it doesn't need to be there. She knew she had lost weight, but what woman wouldn't with what she went through. She supposed she was going to have to start to take better care of herself, at least for the sake of her child. "Thanks for being honest, what next?" Lexi smiled at the nurse. "If you could just pee in the cup and leave it in the room, I will get it when you are done, you can just head back to the ultrasound room when you are done." The nurse responded. Lexi awkwardly finished what the nurse told her to do, washed her hands and hurried to the ultrasound room hoping she wouldn't get lost and find the way. It all looked the same. Luckily, she somehow managed to find the correct room too. She hurried in slightly flustered and still way too anxious. "If you could just sit up on the table and lower your pants a bit as well as lift your shirt a tad we can get started. Lexi hurried over to the table and did exactly what she was told to do. "The gel will be a weird feeling but shouldn't feel cold, we keep it in a warmer. Just wanted you to brace yourself. You ready to see your little one?" The nurse asked Lexi. Lexi could only nod, she was ready, not really, but the anxiety was eating her up and knowing it was better than not. The nurse started feeling around her belly with the probe. Lexi kept her eyes on the screen. She really didn't understand it, she would need to study ultrasound technology when she returned home. Just when she was thinking about the books she would need, she noticed something on the screen and if she was correct...nope...not going to even think about it. "Ms. right there are your babies, they appear to be fraternal, oh what a treat!" The nurse explained. It was exactly what she thought she had seen. There wasn't just one baby in her but two, two babies her husband put in her on his first try. What are the odds? She really wished her brain could process the statistical possibilities, but she couldn't. She just wept, wept for having to be alone in this, for having to become a single mother at 18, she wept for it all, and she didn't know if or when she would ever stop. It should have been the happiest day of her life, but she felt more alone than she ever had in her entire life. This was not how things were supposed to go. Her daddy told her she couldn't change it and that was right. But d*** if she doesn't dwell on it for a bit and wallow at her luck in life. "I...I'm sorry everything is just a lot... Does I mean do they look healthy?" Lexi somehow managed to get out while still crying. "Oh, it's quite alright dear. You aren't the first one to break down here. Pregnancy tends to play havoc with our emotions. It's not a problem, and I am sure the news is shocking." The nurse smiled warmly at her. "As for the babies, both seem to be doing quite well and everything looks good, growing at the appropriate speed. Would you like to hear the heartbeats? Remember it will sound funny. You will hear yours and theirs." The nurse asked. "Yes very much," Lexi said while nodding her head. The nurse pressed a button and the room lit up with the sounds of their heartbeats. Lexi couldn't help but cry harder, and it had nothing to do with being sad. Their heartbeats were the most beautiful sound she had ever heard in her entire life. She was growing a life, two in fact. Hearing them finally brought about an excitement in her. She was afraid she wouldn't get it. She loved them already and that instant sealed it in her soul. It didn't matter if she was alone, she had them, and she would always make sure the three of them were always okay. The nurse handed Lexi a warm towel, "To wipe the gel off with ma'am, once you're done I will walk you down to an exam room, take your vitals and then the doctor will come in and talk with you. I will also print some pictures for you!" The nurse waited for Lexi to right herself, and then she guided her and Caroline into another room. That room just had a sink, a chair and an exam table. Pretty standard, she assumed, just like a regular doctor's office, she hopped up onto the table and let the nurse take her vitals. "Alright dear if you could just hold tight for a few minutes, Dr. Williams will be in to see you." The nurse took all her vitals and then recorded them onto her clipboard. She then smiled at Lexi and left the room. "Congrats, I can't believe you are having twins. How do you feel?" Caroline asked her excitedly. "Not sure how I feel yet. I know I love them with everything in me, but it is still hard to process everything. I'm a work in progress, I guess you could say." Lexi answered honestly. Before Caroline could respond, Dr. Williams walked in. " Hello again Lexi, Congratulations on the twins. Both looked very strong and healthy. However, we have some cause for concern, you are significantly underweight, anemic, and have alarmingly high blood pressure. I understand that certain things have recently transpired in your life that have caused havoc with your personal care, but you need to start looking after yourself better. The twins and your survival depend on it, twins are hard even for someone healthy, so you need to start taking better care of yourself." Great just what Lexi needed someone to lecture her. She just nodded her head. He wasn't telling her anything she didn't already know. She knew all this wasn't as simple as just doing it though. Her heart hurt and sometimes the simple act of breathing was to difficult, but she would do better she had no choice.
