Pregnant

Lexi Pov It had been almost two months since she arrived in the United Kingdom. Caroline took care of the house, cleaning, cooking, and any errands that required leaving the flat. Lexi had read all the books in the living and dining area and was halfway through the ones in her room. She still had an entire study of books and the ones left in her room as well as in Caroline's. She also hadn't spoken to anyone aside from Caroline since she first arrived. She didn't want to talk to anyone and, lately, she has been sick on top of all the emotions she had to sift through and deal with. For the past week or so she has felt incredibly ill, barely able to keep even water down without having to throw up. Caroline kept insisting she see a doctor, but that would require leaving the comfort of her flat. Here she was invisible, lost between one book and another. No one could hurt her if she was just tucked away somewhere in the middle of a good book? She had just finished reading a fascinating text on the life cycle of the blow fly when the urge to throw up hit her again. She rushed to the bathroom attached to her bedroom and dry heaved. She had nothing left to throw up, maybe stomach acids. Caroline walked in while she was bending over the toilet and gathered her hair off her face and rubbed her back soothingly. "Lexi, I found a doctor that was willing to make a house call. I had to explain to him a bit about your situation and I may have described you as an eccentric shut-in to get him to come all this way to see you, but would you please see the doctor? You have me so worried. I am even afraid to talk to your father because he will be going out of his mind with worry about you. You are too sick. It isn't normal even for the amount of heartache and stress you have had to endure. Caroline handed her a towel after she threw nothing up. "Yes Caroline, I will see the doctor as long as I don't have to leave my flat or talk too much. I am not ready for any of that. I am an intellectual. Socializing is difficult for me, especially after what happened." Lexi was worried about what could be wrong with her and that was the only reason she agreed to see the doctor. Hopefully he didn't talk too much, he would give her an antibiotic or something, and she could start feeling like herself again. "Great Dr. Williams will be here within the hour. I also went ahead and scheduled it before I had your permission, but now that you have given your permission you have to forgive me for doing it behind your back," Caroline told Lexi with a cheeky smile. Like the kid who got his hand caught in the cookie jar. "You cheeky lady, whatever am I to do with you?" Lexi shook her finger at Caroline. "You said we were friends. That's what friends do for each other. They look out for you even when you can't do it for yourself." Caroline told her while giving her a half-sided hug and leading her back to her bedroom and into bed. "Lexi, why don't you rest until the Doctor gets here? You look so tired, it doesn't look like you have been getting enough sleep," Caroline told her nicely. "Gee thanks, what a way to nicely tell a woman she looks like h***, is that something friends do?" Lexi asked Caroline, chuckling. "Yes, Lex friends are always honest with one another and always look out for the other. Kind of like having a sister but one you choose and actually like all the time," Caroline answered, chuckling at her own response. Lexie listened to Caroline and laid down. Her mind started drifting towards how pathetic her life was and whether she would be okay just living her days out in the flat her father purchased. She could get lost in her books, ones she could always choose with a happy ending. No heartache, just happiness, well at least contentment. That would have to be enough, she thought. At some point she must have fallen asleep because she was being josseled awake by a very handsome man. Why must they always shake her awake? "Hello Miss Coscove, my name is Dr. Williams. Your friend Caroline told me you haven't been feeling well. I am here to do a check-up so we can try and discover what is ailing you." The handsome man that woke her up told her. The handsome man now known as Dr. Williams poked and prodded her all over while asking a million unrelated questions. This doctor may be more eccentric than herself. His last question, though, made her think quickly, and then she knew her own diagnosis. "When was your last menstrual cycle, Miss Coscove?" Dr. Williams asked. "It is late, Doctor, so my assumptions are that I am in fact pregnant. Could you please do the test to make sure?" Lexi told the doctor what she already knew to be true. She really hoped she was late because of all the stress she had been under, but she had always been a regular every month, like clock work. Her stress just allowed her to not realize she was missing her monthly sharks. "Yes Miss, if you could just pee in this cup and I would also draw some blood for further testing to check nutrient levels as well as some other things," Dr. Williams told her handing her a cup. Lexi went to the bathroom to do as the doctor instructed, being very careful not to pee on her own hands. It was a lot more difficult than the instructions seemed. She finished, then set the cup on the counter while she washed her hands and grabbed a hand towel to grab her specimen cup so as not to spread germs after already washing her hands. She returned it to the doctor, who told her to wait while he tested it, and he would be back to let her know. Not ten minutes later she got the confirmation she dreaded. She got pregnant, the first and only time she had ever had s**. What were the odds of that? She really wanted to try and calculate the odds in her head and come up with the solution, but she couldn't focus or concentrate. She couldn't even take care of herself. How was she going to take care of a baby? She would have been dead a week after her arrival had it not been for Caroline. "Calm down, please, miss it, it really isn't good for the baby, and by your last cycle I would find you to be already nearing the end of your first trimester if the dates are correct." Dr. Williams told her kindly. "The time has to be correct doctor. It happened on my wedding night, and it was the only time the creation of a baby could have happened," Lexi told him, almost in tears. "Maybe we can contact your husband then, please. You really shouldn't be making yourself this upset. It really could be bad for the baby, and you already have slightly elevated blood pressure, which has some cause for concern," said Dr. Williams asked nicely with a warm smile. "We...I..Dr. Williams, I am no longer married, and my now ex-husband would not care that I was expecting. I will figure out how to calm myself down and will try to remain calm in the future. I was scared of learning I would have to be a single mother, but I will do whatever is necessary to make sure my baby is healthy."
