Chapter 5

Three years later, my phone buzzed. It was a number I didn't know, but it had a long-distance code I recognized. My heart did a quick little jump. It was Liam. "Anya?" His voice was a bit deeper now, but still him. "It's Liam." "I know", I said, a small smile on my face. "Hey. How are you?" We talked for a long time. He told me about his successful career, the awards he won, the amazing buildings he worked on. He sounded happy, complete. Then he asked about me. "My business is doing really well, Liam. I just opened my own studio last month, a real big place." I told him about teaching classes, the big jobs I got, the joy I felt every time I took a picture. There was a comfortable silence, different from the heavy ones from before. It was a silence filled with both of us understanding each other, a shared past that distance couldn't erase. "I'm really proud of you, Anya" he said, his voice soft and real."I always knew you'd do great things." "And I'm so proud of you too, Liam. You were meant to do this." "It was hard, you know" he said, sounding a little quieter now. "When you said you couldn't come. I didn't get it back then." "I know" I whispered. "It was hard for me too." "But looking back" he went on "I think… I think you were right. You were stronger than me. You knew what we both needed, even when I couldn't see it." A tear rolled down my face, not from sadness, but from a quiet, huge relief. He understood. He really did. "I had to let you go" I said, the words no longer hurt, but feeling wise. "So we could both find our own way. So we could both become who we were supposed to be." "And look at us now" he said, a soft laugh in his voice. "We did it." We talked a bit more, catching up on life, the conversation easy, like two old friends who had simply found their own paths. When we finally hung up, the silence in my studio wasn't empty anymore. It was filled with peace, a quiet happiness. Letting him go wasn't an end. It was a new start, not just for him, but for me. And because of that hard but brave choice, I had finally found my own clear, bright future.
