Audrey had just left Martha's house when she received a phone call. Since she wasn't far from her place, she decided to wait until she got to the house before answering the call. By the time she got home, the phone had stopped ringing.
She looked at her phone and found it was an unknown caller. This surprised her as she had never received a call from an unknown source before.
She placed her phone and bag on the dining table and went to get herself some wine. When she came back and sat down, her thoughts went straight to the conversation she had with her friend, Martha.
She kept thinking of Martha's reaction to her confession and was worried it might become a problem if the whole story leaked out.
She was sure Martha wouldn't go around talking about it. But she wanted to be extra sure that she could trust Martha on it. And so she decided to call her friend up to make her understand that her confession should be kept a secret.
When Martha's phone rang and she answered the call, Audrey's hope of ever telling her friend vanished. Martha didn't reply with the friendliness she had expected.
"What is it Audrey?" Martha asked in a voice that got Audrey almost regretting why she called her.
"Not a good time to talk is it, Martha?" Audrey held her breath like she was being held by the throat.
"Audrey you've been a friend I thought I could trust." Audrey sighed at hearing Martha tell her that.
"I guess my little adventure isn't what you expected from a friend,"
"I though good of you but now? I may need time to rethink our friendship and perhaps be more careful about being seen with you," Audrey's temperature was rising.
She didn't think her best friend would say such a thing to her. But she knew Martha too well. When she wanted to say something, she never minced words.
"You make it sound like I'm the w***e and you're the good girl, right?"
"I don't think I said anything like that,"
"You don't have to. But I know how you think and I know it's what you mean,"
"However you choose to take it is up to you,"
"I though I had a worthy friend, who came rushing to me for help,"
"Sorry it was my mistake, "
"Sorry I even bothered to help. Next time get a therapist to solve such pressing urges if your husband scares you,"
"I can handle it without a therapist and at least not in the way you suggested or the way you're going about it,"
"Listen Martha, I choose to do whatever I want with my body, do not judge me!"
"And do I care if you throw it to a thousand men? No! Now I know who you are and how you go abou the business of being happily but falsely married."
Anger filled Audrey such that she instantly cut the call. She was way over her head with Martha talking to her like that. As she dropped the phone she reached for her wine and gulped the content all at once. Then the phone rang again.
Thinking it might be martha, she picked up the call immediately without looking at the number.
"What else do we have to say to each other,Martha?"
"I'm not Martha, Mrs. Reevers"
"And who am I talking to then if I may ask?" A long silence followed her question. This bothered her so much that she decided to end the call. But almost immediately the caller started talking.
"Mrs Reevers I have important information regarding someone you are close to that you personally know,"
"Oh, and who might that person be?" Audrey's heart started to beat fast.
"It's has nothing to do with your family, I mean your husband or kids;"
"I have no one I can call my friend. The only one I have we just had an argument"
"Good friends argue and then settle," said the caller
"Thanks for the suggestion, but it might not be that easy. I know my friend,"
"Really?" asked the caller.
"Sorry I don't understand," Audrey was getting nervous now
"I mean do you really know your friend?"
"Who?"
"Martha Parish"
