Chapter Three

“How is he Nat?” I asked concerned for my friend, he seemed happy enough, but I could tell he was hiding behind his smile. “Honestly, Emily, I do not know, it is one argument after another at the moment.  I know he is my brother and I will always take his side, but to be honest, I am finding it difficult to keep out of it.  She was releasing stuff about Sab you know, and it may be my hormones but to do that to your boyfriend’s family is a little below the belt and I am finding it hard to be neutral”  Nathalie looked down obviously perplexed by the whole sorry situation “I know Nat, it has surprised me, Rosa was always work orientated, but to not only blur the line but rub it out completely like she has must be difficult” I had been surprised by Rosa’s actions, she had always been so good, but then again that was when she worked of our team, her loyalty now resided with her new team, and the bigger pay cheque.  Sam and Rosa had hit it off almost as soon as they had met, it will be four years in a few months’ time.  It was good to see him happy, but lately it looked like he was in despair. No doubt we would find out what had happened later when he felt he could talk. “So, what are our plans for the next few weeks” I ask trying to lighten the mood a little “Well I need to go see the midwife next week for my check up, if you don’t mind coming with me, and well this is a little holiday for you so why don’t you decide what you would like to do, maybe we can find some things for Molly to enjoy, if we can ever get her off the bikes” Nat laughed “Yes of course I will come, I want to be your substitute Sab with all things Baby.” I smile at Nat, she shifts in her seat looking a little uncomfortable, so I quickly start clearing up the breakfast dishes for her, and we settle into the large lounge on one of the sofas. “How’s the back ache” I ask her, I knew only too well the aches and pains that come in the latter stages of pregnancy.  Nathalie seemed to take it all in her stride, not phased at all.  “Although I want him to stay and cook for a little longer Emily, I must admit to be getting a little fed up of it now” she ventured, that was the first complaint I had heard from her.  I smiled and nodded understanding where she was coming from. “do you want to go into Barcelona today?” I ask, I have a real need to go to our little tapas café, it was my favourite and Colin’s, I also wanted to go and get some gifts for the baby, it seemed silly to use packing space for them when in England.  “Yes that would be good, I am sure Molly will enjoy being out and about” Nat answered, I smiled so many of my friends at home had dropped me after having Molly, they did not have kids of their own and so to have to accommodate her was more of a hassle to them, something I had never felt with Nat and Sab.  We happily made our plans to head out to the city, I would drive us, whilst Sab and Sam played on the dirt track. Molly ran into the lounge with a big smile, “Look Mummy, Minnie” she shouted full of delight, showing me a large Minnie Mouse, which was a perfect pair to the Micky Mouse Sam had given Nat.  “Oh! Wow! did you say thank you to Uncle Sam?” I asked she turned to Sam and said “Fank oo” he ruffled her hair smiling “Your Welcome little one”   “how did you get her off the bikes” I laughed.  Sam looked sheepishly at me “used Minnie like a carrot on a stick” I giggled, yes bribery and corruption was a good way of getting her to do what was required. “We are going with Auntie Nat soon to a special place for food, where Mummy and Daddy used to go” I said to her.  She looked at me totally disinterested and continued to play with her new toy.  It was too much to ask a toddler to be happy about a restaurant, she was to young to understand.  She knew the man in the photographs at home was ‘Daddy’ but had no understanding yet of what that meant. But I was determined to make sure she would understand, for her to know him even though he was no longer with us. Nat, Molly and I headed off to Barcelona, it was only an hour drive away, and it would give Nat a chance to relax her feet, they looked slightly swollen, bless her.  As we arrived at the restaurant the waiters all greeted us as old friends. They pulled out a highchair for Molly, but she pouted and pushed it away “No big girl” she scolded them, then climbed up on the seat next to me.  Her head just above the table, but it was about picking your battles, and this was one that would result in a tantrum, so I decided to let her try.  The waiter laughed and brought a large cushion for her to sit on, making her a little higher. She sat with her head resting in her hand under her chin as she listened intently to Nat and I talking, nodding her head every now and then, as if she could understand the conversation.  It was so adorable I kissed her head, and she looked up at me smiling. We ate the Tapas, and Molly had some chicken nuggets with fries, specially made for her.  I had once tried her with an olive and let’s just say I did not want to repeat that in a restaurant full of people eating their food. Once finished we had the usual battle of putting Molly into her buggy, then headed off to shop.  Nat was laughing at herself, saying “Look I really waddle now” laughing, she was right she did, as we headed round the clothes shop I saw her looking at some figure hugging dresses, she sighed slightly and put them back with a shrug of her shoulders, she really was getting ready to give birth I thought.  “Let’s find baby Marc some stuff” I ventured, and we happily headed off to the baby store.  I found some adorable clothes, and some little keepsakes for him and purchased them all. Molly was happy looking at the baby clothes as well and pointing at Nat’s tummy saying “Baby Marc” as we headed out of the store to go for a coffee and a break, I stopped instantly.  I was shocked outside was Rosa, and she was in an embrace with another guy, I did not know who he was, but I turned to Nat, she had not noticed, being distracted by a blue pig money box at the entrance, I quickly turn my attention to it, pick it up and go to pay, with her behind me protesting I did not have to buy it for him.  Oh, but I did, right at this moment I had to keep Nat away from outside until Rosa had moved away.  I was mad with her; how dare she do this to the nicest man I knew
