XYRA “Are you all right, Xyra?” Helen asked when she saw my reaction. What was I to say in response to that? I was in a daze because of the unexpected events that had just happened. I wasn’t okay. I had a few questions: Why did Diane decide to treat me like this? How long has her relationship with Xander been going on? And why was this happening to me all of a sudden? “Do you expect her to be okay after everything that just happened to her? I’m not sure whether I should hate you or feel sorry for you, Xyra.” A girl with blond hair, flanked by another girl, had quietly approached us. I’d been so engrossed in my thoughts that I hadn’t noticed when they walked in. My heart had been stabbed and broken into several pieces. “You lied to everyone in the school, pretending you were a high-ranked wolf while you watched the low-ranked like yourself who got into the school with a scholarship get bullied and punished, and you never said a thing. To be honest, you deserve everything that is happening to you right now,” the other girl said. “That doesn’t give her best friend the right to sleep with her boyfriend. No one could have predicted Diane could be so spiteful,” the blonde said in reply. The other girl snorted and said, “Diana would not have been able to ruin her if she hadn’t lied to the school, her boyfriend, and herself. You know that being an omega heiress disqualifies you from being our queen.” “Enough already, both of you!” Helen yelled. “She’s already in a lot of pain. Your squabbling is only making matters worse for her.” “She brought it on herself,” the other girl rightfully said. Golden Claws Academy was a school for the children of elites. Omegas were not permitted to attend except if they were admitted through a scholarship. My case was different. Being the heiress of the Cromwell Empire gave me access to the school as an elite candidate. Then I climbed to the top by studying hard and earning the acknowledgments of the teachers, being known as the best academic student who achieved everything on her own and received love from the students. I was so taken with my popularity that I decided not to tell anyone about my rank except Diane, whom I thought was my best friend but who turned out to be the one who would betray me by telling the school who I really was. I had no idea Diane could do something like that to me. Even before we were admitted to Golden Claws Academy, we were best friends. We had an issue back then that almost led to a fight, but it was resolved and we’ve remained good friends since. We were so close that people thought we were sisters. But I guess it was all in my head because she must never have seen me as one, or else why would she be treating me so cruelly? I staggered away, my legs throbbing, ignoring Helen and the girls calling out to me. My main goal was to find Diane hoping that she tells me it was all a joke, that the video posted isn’t real, and that everything is a prank. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I walked down the corridors, ignoring the students’ comments. Whether they were rude or pitying me, I didn’t care; my only concern was finding Diane. I quickened my pace when I heard her laughter at the far end of the hallway, forcing my throbbing legs to move faster. When I arrived at the foot of the stairs, I heard her telling her minions about what happened in the video and how Xander made her feel special. How Xander promised her that he would end his relationship with me and then make her his. Apparently, I was nothing special to him, just someone to help him with his popularity as he climbed the fame ladder. My heart ached with every word she said; she actually played with me to get the position of queen. She pretended to be my friend to obtain my position. We were friends before we were admitted, so what changed? Why the sudden hatred for me? “WHY?!” I yelled, startling them and everyone else in the hallway. “Why did you do this to me?!” I screamed, unable to control my emotions, all the while climbing the stairs until I reached her. Her smile, which I used to love and think was perfect, now infuriated me. I hated her in every way. “Why did you do this to me? I thought we were friends, that we meant everything to each other. Just why did you do this to me?” I asked, almost in tears. Her laughter sends shockwaves through my entire body. “Friends? Did you think I, Diane Brooks, would go so low as to call you a friend? Were you so blinded by your delusions that you thought I’d ever want to be friends with a low-ranking slut like you?” she yelled, her words piercing my heart. As tears streamed down my face, I clenched my hands tightly around my chest. “Did you hate me so much that you decided to destroy me with a secret you know was told to you in confidence? As if that wasn’t enough, you slept with Xander, knowing how much he meant to me. Why would you do such a thing to me?” I asked, secretly hoping she’d laugh and say it was all a joke and the students were just playing a prank on me like they did last year. “Do you want to know why?” I nodded. “It’s because you disgust me,” she spat out venomously. “You paraded yourself as a queen you aren’t. Deceiving everyone into thinking you were a high-ranking wolf like us was bad enough, but you stole my position and stole my life on top of that; I’m just trying to get it back.” “I stole your life? How? When?” In my baffled state, I asked. “The female student council president position was mine from the start, as was Xander, but just like your mother, you seduced him and stole what was mine. Is it bad that I’m trying to reclaim what is rightfully mine and place you back in your position as omega and nothing more?” Her minions, along with some other students, began to cheer in response to her words. And, while some appeared to disagree with her, no one dared to oppose her. “Diane! Please… Please tell me this is all a joke and you’re trying to prank me like last time,” I began to beg, which made her and her minors laugh even harder. “Look at how highly she thinks of herself. You’re a nobody trying to be somebody. We both know you’re not worthy of being the heiress of the Cromwell Empires. Unfortunately, your father is unable to sire another heir, so you and your mother have won, but know your place, omega.” She sneered and shoved me hard. I wasn’t expecting her to touch me, so I was caught off guard, lost my footing, and rolled down the stairs. Diane and a few other students could be heard laughing. Amongst the students laughing were those who had always been envious of me and had been waiting for my downfall, and now that it was finally happening, they were thrilled to see me reduced to nothing. Some were afraid to help me because Diane had already declared herself the new queen, and anyone who dared to disagree with her would suffer the consequences. I was in pain and yelling internally for help, but no one came to my aid. “Oh my goodness! Guys, someone fell.” The students’ laughter abruptly stopped on hearing the alarm raised by a male, and they began murmuring. Because I was too hurt to lift my head, I couldn’t see who was speaking. A few seconds later, I felt a hand grab my waist and lift me off the ground. “Can you all consider yourselves human after this? You’re all monsters,” said another male voice. Everything that happened after that was a blur as I drifted off into the darkness, reassured by a warm pheromone that I was safe.
