Chapter 5: Breaking Points The days blur together as the tension between me, Brad, and Leo builds with every passing moment. What started as a simple act of revenge now feels like a high-stakes game, one that I didn’t sign up for, yet here I am—playing the part of Brad’s girlfriend, pretending like everything is normal, even though nothing feels normal. Every time I see Leo, my heart races. There’s something unnerving about him, something cold behind those sharp eyes. He watches us with a strange intensity, and I can’t shake the feeling that he knows more than he lets on. The thought sends a shiver down my spine, but Brad insists that we stick to the plan. He says we have to keep up the charade, that Leo is dangerous, and the longer we play the role of the happy couple, the more likely we are to throw him off balance. But it’s harder than it sounds. At dinner tonight, I’m sitting across from Brad again, the flickering candlelight casting shadows on his face. We’ve been pretending for days, and now, it feels like we’ve reached a breaking point. The chemistry between us, real or not, is undeniable. The way his hand brushes mine under the table, the way he looks at me when he thinks no one’s watching—it’s starting to mess with my head. I’m not supposed to be feeling this way. I’m not supposed to be falling for him. This is a game. Right? “Everything okay?” Brad’s voice cuts through my thoughts, pulling me back to reality. His dark eyes are studying me, and I can tell he’s waiting for a response. I force a smile, trying to appear more at ease than I feel. “Yeah, just... thinking.” He raises an eyebrow, clearly not buying it. “About?” I hesitate for a moment. How can I explain the anxiety I feel, the constant tension that’s hanging in the air? How can I tell him that I’m starting to question everything—him, me, this whole plan? “I just... I’m not sure this is working anymore,” I say quietly, lowering my voice so no one else can hear. Brad’s expression hardens, and I can see the shift in his body language. He leans forward slightly, his voice dropping to a whisper. “What do you mean?” I swallow, suddenly aware of how fragile this whole thing feels. “I mean Leo. I don’t think he’s buying it. I feel like he’s onto us.” Brad’s jaw clenches, and for a moment, he doesn’t say anything. He just watches me with that steady, intense gaze. Then, finally, he speaks. “You’re probably right,” he admits. “Leo’s smart. But we can’t back down now. If we do, he’ll know we’re hiding something.” I nod, my stomach churning. I know he’s right. The problem is, I don’t feel like I’m playing a role anymore. It’s becoming harder and harder to keep the lines between reality and the act blurred. “I just don’t know how much longer I can keep pretending,” I admit, the words slipping out before I can stop them. Brad reaches across the table, his fingers brushing against mine in a gesture that feels too intimate for what we’re supposed to be doing. “You’re doing fine. You’ve been great, Sophie. Don’t worry.” His touch sends a strange warmth through me, and I pull my hand back quickly, trying to compose myself. There’s something about the way he looks at me, something in the way his eyes soften when he speaks to me, that makes me question everything. “What happens if he finds out?” I ask, voice barely above a whisper. “What if he goes after us?” Brad leans back in his chair, his eyes scanning the room like he’s looking for something—someone. “We’ll handle it. We’ve got to stay one step ahead of him.” I want to believe him. I really do. But the knot in my stomach tells me this is all spiraling out of control. --- Later that evening, as I walk the deck alone, the cool sea breeze stinging my cheeks, I try to push the doubts away. I tell myself it’s all just temporary. After this cruise, we’ll go our separate ways, and I can leave this whole mess behind. But deep down, I know I’m lying to myself. Brad finds me out here, his footsteps silent on the wooden floor as he approaches. He doesn’t say anything at first, just stands next to me, his presence comforting yet unsettling at the same time. “I think Leo’s getting too close,” I say, breaking the silence. “I don’t like it. He’s always watching.” Brad glances at me, his eyes sharp. “I know. He’s starting to ask questions, isn’t he?” I nod. “He keeps pushing. Asking about how long we’ve been together. He even questioned why you would suddenly settle down.” Brad’s lips tighten into a thin line. “He’s testing us. And you’re doing fine. Just keep playing along.” I turn toward him, my voice softer than I intended. “But what if he doesn’t buy it anymore? What if he figures it out?” Brad’s gaze softens, just a little, and for the briefest moment, I see something vulnerable in his eyes—something that feels real. “We can’t let him figure it out. We need to make sure he doesn’t have any reason to doubt us. We stick to the plan, Sophie. No matter what.” I swallow hard, trying to fight the unease rising inside me. I want to believe him. I want to believe that everything will be fine, that we can control the situation. But something about Leo’s presence, the way he watches us with those calculating eyes, makes me feel like we’re just one wrong move away from disaster. “I’ll do my part,” I say, my voice steady. “But I need you to trust me, too.” Brad nods, his expression unreadable. “I do trust you. That’s why I need you here with me. You’re the only one who can throw Leo off balance.” --- The next day, things take a darker turn. I wake up to a knock on my cabin door. I’m still groggy, but when I open it, I’m met with the last person I expected—Leo. He stands in the doorway, his posture relaxed but his eyes intense. He’s wearing a suit, as always, and for a moment, I can’t help but wonder why he’s here. “Leo?” I ask, feeling a chill crawl down my spine. “What are you doing here?” He doesn’t answer right away. Instead, he steps into the room, his gaze flicking over my disheveled appearance as if he’s evaluating me. “I need to talk to you,” he says, his voice smooth, yet there’s an edge to it that sends a shiver down my spine. “About Brad.” My heart skips a beat, but I try to mask my reaction. “What about Brad?” Leo steps closer, and I feel a slight unease as he gets into my personal space. “I know what’s going on, Sophie.” I freeze, my breath catching in my throat. The room feels suddenly too small, too confining. “What are you talking about?” He smiles, but it’s not a friendly smile. “I know you’re not really his girlfriend.” I blink, trying to steady myself. “You’re mistaken,” I say, trying to sound confident, but inside, I’m panicking. How does he know? How could he possibly know? Leo leans closer, his breath cool against my ear. “I’m not stupid, Sophie. I’ve been watching you both. And I know you’re not who you say you are. So, let’s make a deal.” I pull back slightly, my heart pounding in my chest. “A deal?” I repeat, voice trembling despite myself. Leo’s smile widens. “You’re going to tell me everything about Brad. And if you do... I’ll make sure he never finds out what you’re hiding.” I don’t know what to say. My mind is racing, my thoughts spiraling out of control. I want to shout for help, but I know no one can hear me. The ship is large, and we’re far from anyone who could save me. I take a step back, trying to clear my head. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I lie, my voice weak. Leo doesn’t seem fazed. “Don’t worry. I’ll find out eventually. But I think it’ll be easier if you just tell me now.” I feel trapped, cornered. The walls seem to close in, and for a moment, I wonder if I’ve made the biggest mistake of my life by getting involved with Brad. The plan was supposed to be simple—just act the part, get my revenge, and move on. But now, with Leo standing in front of me, making threats, I realize this game is far more dangerous than I ever imagined. “I’m not telling you anything,” I say, trying to sound braver than I feel. Leo chuckles softly, his eyes cold. “We’ll see about that, Sophie. We’ll see.” And with that, he turns and walks out, leaving me standing there, feeling more lost than ever. The game has changed, and I’m not sure how much longer I can keep pretending.
