Chapter 3

392 Words
Arthur's parents looked rather uneasy. They led me over to Elena and intentionally introduced us, saying we'd be cousins-in-law to keep up appearances. Elena was the daughter-in-law of Mrs. Smith's older sister. "Nice to meet you... Cousin." The moment the last word left my mouth, Elena locked eyes with me, her gaze dripping with defiance and scrutiny. I met her gaze head-on and offered a polite, sweet smile. Realizing she wasn't getting any reaction from me, she awkwardly looked away. I thought that would be the end of it. To my surprise, Elena stood up and sashayed over to a male colleague. Standing just close enough, she began to flirt with him in a sweet, whiny voice. Arthur's parents looked mortified and were about to usher me away. But before they could, Arthur lunged forward, kicked the male employee aside, and fiercely shielded Elena—like a hen protecting her chick. Elena glanced back at me, wearing a smug, victorious grin, as if she had just won some petty female rivalry. My expression didn't waver. I acted completely unbothered. Inside, however, I was absolutely ecstatic. Arthur's behavior made it clear that his feelings for Elena were driven by toxic possessiveness and a violent streak. Any decent, respectable family who did a bit of digging would easily find out about their sordid affair. No respectable family would ever marry their daughter into this mess. That was why I had become the most attractive option among his blind dates. Arthur's parents detested Elena. For one, Elena had once saved Arthur at the cost of her health, leaving her unable to conceive. Secondly, they knew how twisted their relationship was and desperately wanted their son to live a normal life. Since they refused to settle for just anyone, they were determined not to let me slip away. When we got engaged, Mr. Smith gave me a 500,000 marriage settlement and showered me with public praise, showing everyone how much they valued and respected me. As for Arthur—his parents knew he had no financial sense. They didn't dare hand the company over to him or give him too much money. He was basically living on a salary, with virtually no say in family matters. So I played the submissive future daughter-in-law perfectly, and it wasn't long before Arthur and I naturally tied the knot.
