Chapter 4: The Crown Within

1795 Words
The darkness didn’t spread— It answered him. Like it had been waiting. Like it had always been his. The shadows coiled at Elion’s feet, rising slowly, curling around his small body like living smoke. The faint outline of a crown flickered above his head again—unstable… but real. And growing stronger. “Elion…” Elara’s voice broke for the first time. Not as a Queen. But as a mother. “Come back to me.” He didn’t move. Didn’t blink. His gaze was fixed on the man standing before him—the one who called himself the Blood Crown. “I know you,” Elion said quietly. The words echoed unnaturally, layered with something deeper, something ancient. Killian felt it hit his chest like a blow. No child should sound like that. No child should feel like that. The man smiled slowly, satisfaction gleaming in his dark eyes. “Of course you do,” he said. “I’ve been inside you since the moment you were born.” “Stop.” Elara’s voice turned sharp, lethal. “Don’t you dare twist this.” But the man only chuckled. “You still lie to yourself,” he said, almost pitying. “Even now.” Killian stepped forward, placing himself slightly in front of Elara without thinking. “What the hell is he talking about?” he demanded. Elara didn’t answer. Her eyes were locked on her son. Calculating. Terrified. “Elara.” Killian’s voice hardened. “What is inside him?” Silence. Then— “Elion,” she said instead, her tone steady but urgent. “Look at me.” For a second— Just a second— He hesitated. The shadows flickered. His head tilted slightly. Like he was fighting something. “Mother…” he whispered again. Hope surged into Elara’s chest. “Yes. I’m here. You’re safe. Come back to me.” The surrounding darkness pulsed violently. And then— He screamed. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t even long. But it was enough. The entire hall shook as a wave of raw power exploded outward, forcing everyone back. Killian barely managed to stay on his feet. “Elion!” he roared. The boy dropped to his knees, clutching his head. “Make it stop,” he gasped. “Make it stop—” The man didn’t move. Didn’t help. He just watched. Interested. “Fascinating,” he murmured. Elara moved instantly, dropping beside her son. Her hands cupped his face. “Listen to me,” she said firmly. “You are stronger than this. You control it—it does not control you.” “It hurts,” Elion whispered, tears slipping down his face. The sight twisted something deep inside Killian. This wasn’t power. This was suffering. “What did you do to him?” Killian snarled, turning on the man. The man raised a brow. “Me?” he said lightly. “I did nothing.” He gestured lazily toward Elara. “She did.” Killian froze. Slowly— He turned. “Elara…?” Her jaw tightened. But she didn’t deny it. And that was enough. “What did you do?” his voice dropped, dangerous now. Elara didn’t look at him. Her focus stayed on Elion. “I protected him.” “From what?” Killian snapped. “From this,” she said, her voice finally breaking. The shadows surged again, more violently this time. Elion cried out as the faint crown above his head flickered brighter. The man sighed. “You delayed the inevitable,” he said. “You buried his power, suppressed it, chained it…” His gaze darkened. “…but power like this doesn’t stay buried.” Killian’s chest tightened. “What power?” The man smiled. “The kind that destroys kingdoms.” The words settled heavily in the air. Killian looked at Elion—really looked this time. At the shadows. At the crown. At the pain. And for the first time— Fear crept in. “Elara…” he said slowly. “What is he?” She closed her eyes briefly. Then opened them— And there was no hiding left. “He’s not just your son,” she said. Killian’s jaw clenched. “I figured that much.” “He’s not just an heir either.” The man’s smile widened. “Say it,” he whispered. Elara ignored him. But her voice dropped. Quiet. Final. “He’s the vessel.” The word hit like thunder. Killian’s mind reeled. “A vessel… for what?” The man answered this time. “For me.” Everything stopped. “No,” Killian said immediately. “No, that’s not possible.” “And yet,” the man said, spreading his arms slightly, “here we are.” Elion’s body lifted slightly off the ground. Not by force— By power. The shadows wrapped tighter around him, feeding into him, merging with him. “Elara!” Killian barked. “Do something!” “I am trying!” she snapped. Her power surged again, brighter this time—silver light cutting through the darkness as she tried to pull it away from her son. For a moment— It worked. The shadows recoiled. Elion gasped, dropping back to the floor. “Elion, listen to me,” Elara said urgently. “You have to fight it.” “I can’t,” he whispered. “He’s… too loud.” The man laughed softly. “He’s not loud,” he said. “He’s you.” “No!” Elara shouted. The man’s gaze snapped to hers. “You know it’s true,” he said. “You felt it the night he was conceived.” Killian froze. “What?” Elara went still. Too still. “Elara…” Killian’s voice dropped, deadly quiet now. “What is he talking about?” She didn’t answer. Didn’t move. And suddenly— Killian understood. Not everything. But enough. “That night…” he said slowly. “When I rejected you…” The man smiled. “Yes,” he said. “That night.” Killian’s chest tightened. “There was something strange,” he continued, his voice rough. “The bond didn’t just break—it… snapped. Like it was forced.” Elara’s eyes flickered. Just for a second. But Killian saw it. “You knew,” he said. Her silence confirmed it. “You knew something was wrong,” he pressed. “And you didn’t tell me?” “I couldn’t,” she said finally. “Why not?” “Because you would have killed him!” The words exploded out of her. The room fell silent. Killian staggered back slightly. “What…?” “You think I didn’t know what he was?” she said, her voice shaking now. “You think I didn’t feel it? The moment that bond broke, something else took its place.” Her hand trembled as she reached for Elion. “He wasn’t just conceived that night,” she whispered. The man’s smile turned sharp. “He was awakened.” Killian’s breath caught. “No…” Elara’s eyes filled with something raw. “He was never meant to exist like this,” she said. “Not fully. Not so soon.” Killian’s head shook. “I don’t understand.” “You were never supposed to reject her.” The man’s voice cut through like a blade. Both of them turned. “What?” Killian demanded. The man stepped forward slowly. “That night,” he said, “you didn’t make that choice alone.” The world seemed to tilt. “What are you saying?” Killian asked. The man’s smile was chilling. “I’m saying…” He leaned slightly closer. “…you were influenced.” Silence. Dead. Heavy. Killian’s mind went blank. “No,” he said. “That’s not true.” “Oh, it is,” the man replied calmly. “A whisper here. A doubt there. A push at just the right moment.” His eyes gleamed. “And you broke her yourself.” Killian staggered back. His heart slammed violently against his ribs. “You’re lying.” “Am I?” the man tilted his head. “Or are you finally realizing that your greatest mistake… wasn’t entirely yours?” Killian’s gaze snapped to Elara. She didn’t deny it. Didn’t confirm it. But her silence— It said everything. Rage exploded inside him. “You let me believe I did that to you!” he roared. Elara’s eyes flashed. “You did!” she shot back. “Influenced or not—you still chose to say those words!” The truth hit harder than anything else. Because she was right. The man clapped slowly. “Beautiful,” he said. “Truly.” “Shut up!” Killian snarled. But it was too late. The damage was done. The truth was out. And Elion— Was still changing. The shadows surged again. Stronger. Darker. The faint crown above his head solidified further. “Elara…” Killian said, panic creeping into his voice now. “He’s getting worse.” “I know.” The man stepped back slightly. Watching. Waiting. “It’s almost time,” he said. “For what?” Killian demanded. The man’s smile returned. “For him to choose.” Elion’s body lifted again. Higher this time. The shadows forming around him like a throne. “Choose what?” Elara snapped. The man’s eyes gleamed. “Which side of himself he becomes.” The air grew heavy. Suffocating. Elion’s eyes flickered between blue… …and black. “Mother…” he whispered. Elara stepped forward. “I’m here.” Then— He looked at Killian. And something in his expression shifted. Something unfamiliar. Something dangerous. “Father…” The word hit Killian like a punch to the chest. It was the first time. The first time he had ever called him that. Killian stepped forward instinctively. “I’m here,” he said. And for a moment— Everything stilled. Elion looked between them. Torn. Breaking. Then— The shadows surged violently. And his voice changed. “Make me stop.” Elara’s heart shattered. Killian’s instincts screamed. The man smiled. And then— Elion’s eyes turned completely black. The crown above his head solidified. Dark. Complete. Ancient. Elara froze. “No…” she whispered. Killian stepped back, horror flooding his veins. “Elion…?” The boy slowly lifted his head. And when he spoke— It wasn’t just him. “Too late.” The voice echoed. Layered. Terrifying. The man bowed slightly. “Welcome back, my King.” And Elara realized the truth— Not too late to stop it. But too late to undo it. Because the thing standing before them… was no longer just their son.
