I used to be like that, too.
She is still intently watching the commercial. She felt a throbbing pain in her chest.
You are still pained by those petty things, huh? Thea, grow up. Think like a grown-up. Those days have gone by, move on. There are many things to put your mind on.
You need to find a decent job, not just a part-time one. You cannot survive being one of those fresh graduate part-timers.
You need to pay rent.
You need food and water.
You need to buy your medicines.
You need to buy detergent, too. Your clothes stink. You have worn it repeatedly for a week without washing it.
You need to have a proper rest.
Thea is tight on money, having only a crispy hundred peso bill in her wallet. She is whispering and talking to herself like a crazy woman while sitting on the pavement. Some people threw coins in front of her and mistook her for being a beggar.
While sitting on the pavement, she carefully observed the metropolitan scene skyscrapers, colorful high-rise buildings, sounds of heels and shoes, honking of vehicles. Sparkly lights are everywhere, luxuries can be seen anywhere.
One building caught her eye. It is the tallest of all the buildings present in the city.
What a frightening sight. A massive earthquake will destroy that, I am sure of it. It will be complete mayhem once that building collapses.
She felt the oozing heat from the pavement burning her skin after sitting there for minutes and it is hotter than the air she is inhaling. Staying here under the sun, sitting here for an hour can cook a whole chicken. I should leave. Now.
Thea looked at her wristwatch and was shocked at what she saw. It is now one o'clock in the afternoon. She spent almost five hours trying to find a job in an accounting firm but had no single luck. No one hired her despite having all her credentials and grades.
It is already one o'clock in the afternoon! I have a shift this afternoon!
She hurriedly grabbed her handbag and got up when she heard this time, a cracking sound. She looked down.
The high-heeled stilettos she bought in the province for her to use in applying for a job had already given up on her weight after many months, and it made her lose her balance. She grabbed the light post near her for support. Her feet slipped, and the pair of her shoes fell into the gutter. It flowed away in the sewer located underground.
"No! There is no way I would lose my only pair of shoes! I would have nothing to wear!"
She shouted very loud that the onlookers and bystanders started to walk near her.
She continued to shout that it made her head pained. She is becoming dizzy again.
Here it is, again. This cannot do, I am all alone in this city, no one will attend to me and my needs.
Her eyelids are now drooping slowly and her sight is becoming more blurry. A tall, muscular man is walking in her direction. He walked towards her.
How handsome.
Innocent-looking eyes, short, shiny black hair, small face, long eyelashes, sharp, aquiline nose, kissable lips.
What an angel. Can I have your phone number? I am single and ready to mingle.
"Miss, are you alright?" The man asked.
There is no answer. Thea cannot speak a word.
Mister Handsome, I am not okay. Can you help me? I am hungry and thirsty, I haven't eaten my breakfast. Please give me food and water, and I need to be in the hospital right now.
The man is staring at Thea, almost two meters far from her. Thea is smiling at him, flirtatiously.
She winked at him, even if she cannot stand properly. She looks like a drunk man, not able to stand properly.
I think I will be having an attack. What the hell? The medicines did not do their jobs? Am I having a medical tolerance now?
No. No. Don't you dare, Thea. Don't you dare do a scene here.
She felt her heart had an irregular beat, then it stopped. Her eyes finally closed and her body became weak. She became like a jelly, and her body gave in, falling down the concrete. She almost hit her head, when the stranger hurriedly ran towards her and catch her head just right in time with his hands.
People around her screamed.
"Call an ambulance, now! Somebody fainted! She is in dire need!"
An old woman, in her nineties, with her hands trembling, got her phone from her bag and dialed 911. On the other end, a male phone operator answered her call after a second.
"Hello, good day, this is a 911 emergency. How may I help you now?"
"Hello, Sir, can you please go here, there is a young woman who fainted here outside the Luxxe Shopping Mall, in the farthest corner of Rizal Street. Come here in an instant, she needs help. Her chest is not moving. We cannot see her breathing right now. She has been like that for a couple of minutes now. She might die."
"What is her name? Do you know the young woman? Is she your family? How are you two related?"
"I do not know this young woman, Mister, we are not related by blood. I was just passing by to buy something from the wet market when I saw the incident. No one is having the initiative to call for help so I called you guys. Stop asking and blabbering nonsense, rush yourselves to the scene!"
A minute of silence was heard by everyone.
They saw something gruesome.
The old woman who dialed 911 shouted again. This time, it is louder and she sounded more panicky.
A red liquid is flowing down Thea's face. Loads of blood is coming out of her nose. More than half a glass of blood is drenching her white clothes.
"This young woman is having a nosebleed! Come here right now! Oh my God kindly help her!"
