Anna stared at the doctor, paralyzed, as if his words were in a language she couldn’t understand. Her mind felt heavy, as though she were moving through water, slow, muffled, and disconnected from reality. “Hello, Miss Hawkins?” the doctor said gently, his voice cutting through Anna’s daze and pulling her back to reality. “Yeah… yeah,” Anna murmured, her voice barely more than a whisper. “You are three weeks pregnant,” the doctor said again. The words hit her like a punch to the stomach. She felt her knees weaken, and a cold wave of disbelief washed over her. “What do you mean, doctor? How can I be? I haven’t been… I haven’t been sexually active for months. There has to be some mistake,” Anna said with a trembling voice. “There is no mistake, Miss Hawkins,” the doctor replied calmly.
