CHAPTER 14: THE POINT OF NO RETURN Lian’s breath was shallow, her chest rising and falling with the force of the kiss that had left her reeling. Her body was still humming with the aftershock of Kai’s touch, and despite the storm of emotions raging inside her, a small, terrifying part of her couldn’t deny that she was more drawn to him than ever before. She stood frozen, caught between the lingering heat of his kiss and the cold reality of the situation. Her heart pounded, and for a moment, all she could hear was the rapid thudding in her chest. Kai stepped back slightly, his fingers still resting lightly on her arm, though he made no attempt to pull her in again. His gaze held hers, unwavering and intense, like he could see everything she was trying to hide. She hated how easily he could read her, how he knew just how to make her react. “Don’t,” she whispered, her voice hoarse with emotion. “Don’t do this to me.” He tilted his head slightly, studying her with that inscrutable look of his. His lips curved upward in a slow, almost amused smile, though there was no humor in it. “You’re the one who keeps coming back, Lian,” he said softly, his voice a low drawl. “Don’t blame me for what you’re feeling.” Her stomach churned at his words. How could he say something like that when she was so clearly torn? She wanted to shout at him, to tell him that she wasn’t some toy for him to control. But she knew, deep down, that he wasn’t wrong. She had come back. Again and again. And the more she tried to fight it, the stronger the pull between them became. “I don’t want to feel this,” she said through clenched teeth, her voice trembling with frustration. “I hate you.” Kai’s eyes darkened at her words, though his smile didn’t falter. “You don’t hate me,” he murmured, his hand sliding down her arm in a slow, deliberate motion, sending a shiver down her spine. “You’re just scared.” Her throat tightened, and she took a step back, trying to put some space between them. But Kai’s eyes followed her every movement, his focus unyielding, unbreakable. The air around them was thick with tension, the kind of tension that could snap at any moment. “I’m not scared of you,” Lian said, though even she didn’t believe the words. Maybe I am, she thought. Maybe I’m more afraid of what I feel than I am of him. He reached out, his hand brushing against her cheek, his fingers surprisingly gentle. The touch made her heart stutter in her chest, and she bit her lip, trying to push back the overwhelming urge to lean into him. “You should be,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper, his face mere inches from hers. “Because the more you fight this, the worse it’s going to be for you.” Lian’s breath caught, her pulse racing. “I won’t be controlled,” she snapped, her voice stronger now, though it shook with the weight of her emotions. “Not by you. Not by anyone.” His expression softened just the tiniest bit, and for a brief, fleeting moment, there was something almost human in his gaze—something that made her wonder if there was more to Kai Ren than the ruthless mafia leader she had come to know. But the moment passed quickly, and the mask of control slid back into place. “You think you can resist me?” he asked, his voice still low, still commanding. “You’ve been resisting me since the day we met. And yet here you are. Again.” Lian couldn’t deny the truth in his words. She had resisted him at every turn. But the more she fought, the more she lost herself. She had never been this conflicted about anything in her life. “You think I want this?” she asked, her voice rising slightly, desperation creeping in. “You think I want to fall into your arms like some pathetic little pawn? You’re wrong. I’ll never be yours.” Kai’s eyes darkened, and in an instant, he was in front of her again, his presence so overwhelming that she could barely think straight. He placed one hand on the small of her back, pulling her against him with a force that took her breath away. The warmth of his body seemed to radiate through her, and she instinctively pressed herself closer, even as her mind screamed at her to fight. “You already are mine,” he said, his voice steady and certain, as though it were a fact beyond dispute. His lips brushed against her ear, sending a shiver through her. “And you always will be. Whether you admit it or not.” Lian’s heart was pounding, her body betraying her as she felt herself melt into him despite every instinct telling her to pull away. The air between them crackled, electric, and she could feel the tension building once again. Why am I letting him do this to me? she wondered desperately, though a part of her already knew the answer. She had never been able to resist him—not completely. The force of his will, the raw magnetism of his presence… it was like a storm, and she was caught in the middle of it. Before she could say another word, Kai’s lips were on hers again—hard, demanding, overwhelming. This time, there was no hesitation, no gentle coaxing. His kiss was full of command, of ownership, and she responded without thinking. She couldn’t stop herself. Her hands found their way to his chest, pressing against him, and for a moment, she lost herself in the heat of the kiss, in the dizzying sensation of his lips on hers. When they finally broke apart, both of them breathing heavily, Lian’s mind was a blur. She wanted to push him away. She wanted to scream, to fight, but all she could do was stand there, her body trembling, her heart pounding in her chest. Kai looked at her for a long moment, his eyes dark and unreadable. “You’ll come to understand, Lian,” he said, his voice softer now, though still carrying that dangerous edge. “You’ll learn what it means to be mine.” Lian shook her head, unable to form words. She hated this. She hated feeling this way. But no matter how much she tried to deny it, no matter how much she told herself that she hated him, there was no escaping the truth. She was already falling. And there was no turning back.
