CHAPTER 15: THE UNRAVELING THREAD
The days blurred into each other as Lian tried, unsuccessfully, to regain control of her own emotions. Kai’s presence seemed to haunt every room she entered, every corner of her mind. His touch, his words—everything about him—lingered like a dark shadow she could not escape. No matter how hard she tried to fight, she couldn’t deny the undeniable pull between them.
And it terrified her.
She had always been in control of her own destiny. She had always fought for what she wanted, even if it meant facing impossible odds. But now, she was facing something she couldn’t even name. Something that had nothing to do with logic or reason. She had no idea what to do with these feelings stirring deep inside her.
That afternoon, she found herself pacing in the sitting room, unable to sit still. She couldn’t shake the feeling of his touch, still fresh on her skin, like a brand that marked her in ways she didn’t understand.
I won’t let him control me. The thought echoed in her mind, a mantra that she tried to cling to, but the doubt was already creeping in. What if it was already too late? What if her heart, her body, had already betrayed her, even if her mind refused to accept it?
The door to the sitting room opened without warning, and Lian looked up, startled. Kai stood in the doorway, his presence filling the space as it always did. His expression was unreadable, but the air between them crackled with tension. He was dressed in his usual dark, tailored suit, looking every bit the ruthless leader he was, but the way his eyes locked onto hers sent a shiver through her.
“You’ve been avoiding me,” he said, his voice low and controlled. It wasn’t a question, just a statement of fact.
Lian’s heart skipped a beat. She swallowed hard, trying to steady herself. “I haven’t been avoiding you,” she replied, her voice steady even though her pulse raced. “I just don’t feel like being a part of your little games right now.”
Kai’s lips curled into a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. He stepped into the room, closing the door behind him with a soft click, and approached her with slow, deliberate steps.
“You think this is a game, Lian?” he asked, his voice tinged with something dark—something dangerous. “You think you can just shut me out like that?”
She took a step back, her heart hammering in her chest. “I don’t want any part of whatever this is,” she said, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound firm.
Kai’s eyes narrowed as he stopped in front of her. “You don’t get to make that choice,” he said quietly, his voice dripping with authority. “You’re mine now, whether you like it or not.”
The words struck her like a physical blow. She clenched her fists at her sides, her mind screaming at her to push him away, to break free of his grip on her. But her body… her body betrayed her. She felt herself drawn to him, the heat between them undeniable.
Kai reached out, his fingers brushing her cheek gently, and she flinched instinctively. His eyes softened for the briefest moment, but only for the briefest. Then the coldness returned, and he stepped closer, his lips almost brushing her ear.
“You’ve been playing with fire, Lian,” he whispered, his breath hot against her skin. “And now, you’re burned.”
Lian’s breath caught in her throat as his words sank in. She didn’t know what it was about him—his dark charm, his control—that kept drawing her back in. But she couldn’t keep denying it any longer. She wanted him. She hated that she wanted him, but she couldn’t stop herself.
“I’m not some pawn for you to control,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. But even as she spoke, she felt a sharp, aching hunger rise in her chest. The words felt hollow coming from her lips.
Kai’s fingers slid from her cheek to her neck, his touch feather-light but possessive. He tilted her head back slightly, so she was forced to look up at him, her pulse racing in her throat.
“You’re mine in every way that matters, Lian,” he murmured, his lips brushing against her jawline. “And no matter how much you try to fight it, you’ll never be free of me.”
She swallowed hard, feeling the weight of his words sink deep into her bones. She wanted to scream at him, to demand her freedom, but every part of her longed to pull him closer, to let him take control. She hated that she was so weak in his presence.
Before she could stop herself, she found her lips crashing against his in a desperate, hungry kiss. It was messy and raw, as if they both needed something from the other, something neither of them could name. His hands gripped her waist, pulling her against him as if he couldn’t get close enough.
For a moment, Lian allowed herself to lose herself in the kiss. She could feel the fire igniting within her, consuming every ounce of resistance she had left. Her hands tangled in his hair, tugging him closer as the kiss deepened, the passion between them burning hotter with each passing second.
And then, just as quickly as it had begun, the kiss ended. Lian pulled away, gasping for air, her heart thundering in her chest. She could feel the heat of his body still pressed against hers, but she was too confused to think clearly.
Kai’s breathing was heavy, his eyes dark with desire. “That’s the thing about you, Lian,” he said, his voice thick with something dangerous. “You say you hate me, but every time you kiss me, it proves you’re lying.”
She stepped back, her hands trembling at her sides. Her chest ached with the intensity of what had just transpired. “I don’t want this,” she managed to say, her voice raw, but the words felt empty even as they left her mouth.
Kai didn’t respond right away. Instead, he reached out and cupped her face gently, his thumb brushing across her lower lip. “You can lie to yourself all you want,” he murmured. “But the truth is already inside you. You can’t keep running from it.”
Lian shook her head, trying to push back the growing warmth that threatened to overtake her. “I’m not yours. I’ll never be yours.”
His gaze was unyielding. “We’ll see about that.”
And just like that, the tension between them escalated, and she was left standing there, trembling with a mixture of anger, confusion, and something she didn’t want to name.
