CHAPTER 18: TORN BETWEEN THE CHAOS
Lian’s mind was a whirlwind of confusion, the storm of her emotions growing more violent with each passing moment. She couldn’t stop thinking about him—about Kai—and the way his presence dominated her every thought. She hated him. She should hate him. But the more she fought it, the more she felt herself unraveling. There was no escape. No sanctuary. Every time she tried to push him away, he seemed to pull her closer, until there was no distance left between them.
The mansion was cold that night, the chill creeping under her skin, but it was nothing compared to the heat of her internal battle. She paced the floor of her room, restless, unable to focus on anything. Her thoughts kept drifting back to that moment—the kiss. His touch. His words. How easily he had gotten under her skin, how easily he had broken through all the walls she had so carefully built around herself.
You’re mine.
The words rang in her mind like a constant echo, a reminder of the trap she had fallen into. She didn’t want to be his. She didn’t want to give in, but a part of her couldn’t deny the pull.
A sharp knock at the door interrupted her thoughts, and she froze, her heart skipping a beat. She knew exactly who it was.
“Lian,” Kai’s voice came from the other side, smooth, commanding. “We need to talk.”
The last thing she wanted to do was face him. But she couldn’t avoid him forever, could she? Taking a deep breath, she crossed the room and opened the door. His tall figure stood in the doorway, the faint glow from the hallway casting shadows across his chiseled features.
He stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, his presence filling the room, making the air feel thicker, heavier.
“I’ve been waiting for you,” Kai said, his voice low, almost teasing.
Lian swallowed hard, trying to muster the strength to remain unaffected by his presence. “I’m sure you have.”
His gaze was piercing, those dark eyes studying her with an intensity that made her pulse quicken. “You’re afraid of me, aren’t you?”
She refused to let him see how much those words affected her. “I’m not afraid of you.”
He smirked, his expression almost amused. “You don’t have to admit it, Lian. I can see it in your eyes. Every time you look at me, you’re afraid. Not of what I can do, but of what I make you feel.”
She stepped back, shaking her head, trying to push him out of her mind. “You’re wrong. I’m not afraid of you. I hate you.”
Kai took a step forward, closing the gap between them with slow, deliberate movements. “If you hate me, why do you let me get this close? Why do you let me touch you?”
Her breath caught in her throat, and her body tensed as he took another step. He was so close now, so close she could feel the heat radiating from his body, and she couldn’t stop the way her heart raced. She hated herself for it.
“Stay away from me,” she said, her voice tight, but the command lacked the strength it needed.
“No,” he said simply, his hand reaching out to gently cup her chin, tilting her face up to meet his. “I can’t stay away from you, Lian. You don’t understand how much I want you. How much I need you.”
Lian tried to pull back, but his grip tightened, his thumb tracing the curve of her jaw. His touch was maddeningly gentle, and yet it sent shockwaves of heat through her body, leaving her feeling exposed, vulnerable.
“I’m not one of your toys, Kai,” she hissed, though it was more a defense than a true declaration of independence.
“Then stop making me treat you like one,” he whispered. “Stop making me fight for your attention. If you don’t want me, then why do you keep giving in? Why do you come back to me?”
Lian’s chest tightened, and for a fleeting moment, she considered his words. It was true. She had come back to him. Time and time again. She had fought him, but there were moments, small moments, when she found herself seeking him, drawn to him in ways she didn’t fully understand.
“Because you’re the one who won’t let me go,” she muttered, the words slipping from her lips before she could stop them.
A dark smile curled on Kai’s lips. “I’m not the one holding you, Lian. You’re the one who can’t let go.”
His words hit her like a slap, and for a second, everything inside her stilled. She hated him. She hated the control he had over her, the way he made her feel like she was losing herself. But in the deepest part of her, there was a truth she couldn’t deny.
Maybe I don’t want to let go.
The thought terrified her.
Kai’s hand slipped from her chin to the back of her neck, his thumb brushing her skin in a slow, deliberate motion. “I’m not asking for love, Lian,” he said softly. “I’m asking for something far simpler.”
“What?” she breathed, her mind swimming, trying to make sense of everything.
“Obedience,” he murmured, his lips brushing the edge of her ear. “Your submission. To me. To this.”
The word submission sent a jolt through her, and her stomach flipped. She wanted to scream, to push him away, but her body was betraying her again. Her breath hitched, her pulse raced, and despite everything she had told herself, she didn’t want him to stop.
He was right. She wasn’t afraid of him. She was afraid of herself. Afraid of how badly she wanted him.
His lips pressed to hers then, his kiss hungry, demanding, as if he couldn’t hold back any longer. And for a second, she didn’t pull away. She didn’t fight him. She let herself be lost in the kiss, in the feel of him, in the fire that burned between them.
But reality came crashing back. She shoved him away, her chest heaving with a mixture of anger and desire.
“You don’t get to do this to me,” she spat, wiping her lips as if his kiss left a stain on her skin.
Kai took a step back, his face unreadable, but his eyes dark, dangerous. “You’re already mine, Lian. And whether you like it or not, you always will be.”
