CHAPTER 10: THE TIPPING POINT Lian stood motionless for a long moment, staring at the door Wei Jun had just closed behind him. His words, though chilling, stirred something within her, a storm of conflicting emotions she couldn’t quite process. He was right about one thing—Kai was dangerous. Lian had known that from the start. What she hadn’t known, or perhaps refused to admit, was that she was already too deeply entangled in his world. Before it’s too late. Wei Jun’s warning echoed in her mind, a haunting reminder that she couldn’t walk away from this—no matter how much she might wish otherwise. She exhaled sharply, turning her gaze to the window, the dark city sprawled out before her like a labyrinth she would never escape. It wasn’t just the physical barriers that trapped her. It was the mental ones, the chains of fear, anger, and… attraction that Kai had forged around her. She knew she needed to make a decision. A real decision. Either fight back or let herself be swallowed whole by Kai’s world. And yet, every instinct screamed at her to flee—to run far away from everything, from him, from this life. But Lian couldn’t deny the truth any longer. Even if she left, even if she went into hiding, the shadows of Kai Ren would always follow her. She was too close to him now, too valuable to his empire. He wouldn’t just let her go. A sudden knock at the door jolted her from her thoughts, and for a brief second, panic rose in her chest. Was it Kai? Had he come to finish what he started in the elevator? Or perhaps it was Wei Jun again, trying to convince her to run away with him, to escape the mess she’d found herself in. She approached the door cautiously, her heart hammering in her chest. This time, when she opened it, she found a familiar face, but one she hadn’t expected. Jian Li, one of Kai’s most trusted men, stood in the doorway. His expression was neutral, his features as unreadable as ever, but there was something in the way he looked at her—a hint of something more, something that didn’t belong in the cold, calculating world of the mafia. “Lian,” he said quietly, stepping forward without waiting for an invitation. His tone wasn’t hostile, but there was an urgency in his voice that caught her off guard. “Kai wants to see you.” She stiffened. “What for?” Jian's gaze flickered for a moment, as if he were choosing his words carefully. “He didn’t say. But you know how he is. When he calls, you go.” She crossed her arms, her stomach twisting with a sudden anxiety. “I’m not going anywhere.” Jian’s eyes softened for the briefest moment. “You know what will happen if you don’t. You’ll only make things harder for yourself.” He paused, his voice lowering. “Kai won’t wait forever.” Lian’s mind raced. The thought of facing Kai again sent a jolt of fear through her veins. But the fear wasn’t just about what he might do to her—it was the fear of what she might feel, how close she might get to the edge of what she was trying so desperately to avoid. For a moment, Jian watched her, as though waiting for her decision. “I’m not your prisoner,” she finally said, her voice strong despite the tremble in her hands. “I won’t let him treat me like one.” Jian stepped closer, his voice low and urgent. “You might not have a choice. But you’ll always have a choice in how you play the game, Lian. Remember that.” He didn’t wait for her response. With one last glance, he turned on his heel and walked out of the room, leaving Lian to grapple with his words and the fear settling in her chest like a cold hand.
