CHAPTER 20: UNRAVELING CONTROL The room was thick with tension, the air heavy between them. Lian had allowed herself to be swept up in the kiss, but now that it was over, the reality of what had just happened hit her like a wave. Her heart was still pounding in her chest, and every nerve in her body seemed to be on high alert. But it wasn’t just the kiss—it was everything that came with it. The admission. The vulnerability. The truth that she could no longer deny. Kai stood in front of her, his eyes dark with something far more complex than mere desire. His jaw was clenched, but his expression softened just slightly, a flicker of something unspoken passing between them. Something raw. Lian pulled away from him slowly, her breath still uneven, and her eyes avoided his, unable to face the complexity of what was happening inside her. “What does this mean, Kai?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly as she tried to hold onto the remnants of her self-control. “What does it change?” Kai didn’t answer right away. He reached up to brush a strand of hair from her face, his fingers grazing her skin like a touch that could burn. “It means you’re no longer lying to yourself,” he said quietly, his voice low, almost intimate. “It means I’ve gotten closer. And now, we both have to deal with it.” Lian closed her eyes, her thoughts racing. The kiss—those feelings—hadn’t been a mistake. She couldn’t pretend they had been. But she didn’t know how to process it. She had spent so long telling herself that she would never allow him to break her down, to make her submit to him. But there she was, standing in front of him, her emotions completely in his grasp. “Don’t make this about me, Kai,” she said, her voice rising just a little, frustration creeping in. “You can’t keep doing this, using me, making me feel... this.” “Making you feel?” Kai’s voice was almost amused, but there was something darker beneath it, something that made her heart tighten in her chest. He took a step closer, forcing her to look at him. “You think I’m making you feel something, Lian? No. You’ve always felt it. You’ve just been too afraid to face it.” Her breath caught in her throat as he reached out, his hand gently cupping her chin, tilting her face up to meet his gaze. His touch was commanding yet tender, and for a moment, Lian could have sworn that she saw something in his eyes she hadn’t before—something almost... vulnerable. “I’ve never wanted to break you, Lian,” Kai said, his voice soft but resolute. “I want you to see what’s been in front of you all along. To see that what we have... what we’re building... it’s real.” Lian’s heart raced, and she pulled away from his grasp, wrapping her arms around herself, trying to regain some sense of control. “This isn’t real,” she whispered fiercely, but the words felt hollow coming from her. She didn’t believe them anymore, and she knew it. “I don’t belong to you.” He let her step back, but there was no retreating from him, from what had just happened between them. He could see it in her eyes—he could feel it, too. The pull. The connection. The way they were both sinking into something they couldn’t control, no matter how much they wanted to. Lian turned her back to him, pacing across the room, trying to gather her thoughts. She needed distance. She needed clarity. But the more she tried to push him out of her mind, the more he came back, over and over, like an insidious whisper she couldn’t escape. “You don’t want to admit it, but you can’t ignore it,” Kai’s voice was like a quiet storm behind her. “You don’t belong to me, Lian. Not yet. But you will.” She spun around to face him, her anger flaring up, though it was accompanied by an underlying current of something she didn’t understand. “I don’t need you to tell me what I will do,” she shot back, her voice sharp, desperate for the illusion of control. “I’m not some puppet for you to string along.” Kai’s expression hardened, the playful edge in his demeanor disappearing as he stepped closer, his movements purposeful. “And yet here you are, Lian. Every time you fight me, I pull you closer. Every time you try to push me away, I make you feel things you can’t explain. You make this happen. I’m not forcing you to do anything.” Her eyes flashed with anger. “You think you have me figured out?” “Don’t you?” Kai’s voice dropped, becoming a low growl. “You think you can hide from this, but you can’t. You want me. And when you stop pretending you don’t, maybe you’ll understand why I keep doing this to you.” Her pulse quickened as he stepped even closer, the space between them closing to nothing. He was so close now, she could feel the heat radiating off his body, hear the faintest hitch in his breath. His hand reached out, brushing her cheek with a tenderness that made her heart skip a beat. “I’ve waited so long for this moment,” he murmured, his thumb grazing her lower lip. “But I’ll wait longer. You’ll come to me, Lian. You won’t be able to stay away forever.” The weight of his words pressed down on her, and despite herself, she felt the edges of her resolve begin to crack. There was something in his touch, in his voice, that made it impossible to stay cold, to stay detached. For a fleeting second, Lian let herself feel it. Let herself sink into the desire that had been simmering beneath the surface. Before she could stop herself, she reached out, her hand trembling as it slid into the crook of his neck. She pulled him closer, her lips crashing against his once more—fiercer this time, a mix of frustration and yearning, the line between hatred and desire blurring. Kai groaned into the kiss, his hands sliding to her waist, pulling her against him with an intensity that left her breathless. There was no turning back now. No pretending anymore. They were past the point of denial. The pull between them was too strong. And for the first time, Lian allowed herself to let go, her body surrendering to him, to what she couldn’t escape, no matter how hard she tried.
