CHAPTER 12: THE FIRE BETWEEN THEM The elevator descended with an eerie silence, the only sound the quiet hum of the machine as it carried Lian deeper into the heart of Kai’s empire. She could feel the pull of something darker around her, a presence that lingered like smoke in the air. Jian stood beside her, silent, his cold demeanor offering no comfort. Lian’s heart raced, her thoughts whirling. She had no choice but to follow him now. She had no choice but to face Kai. When the doors opened, they stepped out into a long, dimly lit hallway. The walls were lined with expensive art, each piece exuding a quiet, refined wealth that contrasted with the intensity that hung in the air. At the end of the hallway was a massive door—his office, no doubt. Jian knocked once, then entered without waiting for a response. Lian followed, her legs heavy as if they weighed a thousand pounds. Kai was standing by the window when they entered, looking out at the sprawling city below, his posture stiff, his silhouette sharp against the soft glow of the evening sky. The moment his eyes flicked over to her, a quiet tension filled the room. The way he looked at her—there was an intensity there, something predatory yet possessive, as if he could see right through her, could unravel her in an instant if he wanted. “Lian,” Kai’s voice was low, dangerous. “I was wondering how long you’d make me wait.” She clenched her fists at her sides, refusing to let him see the rush of emotions that surged through her. “I’m here,” she said, trying to sound confident, though her voice trembled ever so slightly. “What do you want?” He stepped toward her slowly, his footsteps echoing in the silent room. The air between them seemed to crackle with tension, an invisible force pulling her closer to him, even though every instinct told her to step back. “I want you to understand something,” he said, his eyes locked on hers, unreadable but intense. “You’re mine now, Lian. No more running. No more hiding.” Her breath hitched in her throat, her pulse quickening at the weight of his words. There was no denying the raw, magnetic pull between them. She couldn’t escape it, no matter how much she hated to admit it. Before she could speak, Kai was right in front of her, his presence overwhelming. His hand reached out, brushing against her cheek in a gesture that should have been tender, but instead felt like a command. “I don’t want your love,” he murmured, his voice dark and low, “I just want your submission. And your obedience.” Lian’s heart pounded in her chest, every inch of her body screaming to pull away, to break free. But she stood frozen, her body betraying her as she felt her breath catch in her throat. She hated him, so much—and yet… He leaned down, his lips just a breath away from hers. His presence consumed her, a heady mix of danger and something else, something that made her heart beat erratically. She wanted to push him away. She should push him away. But when his lips finally touched hers, it wasn’t with the force she expected. It was soft at first, a brush of his mouth against hers that sent a jolt of heat through her. Her body reacted before her mind could catch up, her pulse quickening as she fought the overwhelming rush of sensation. She pulled away sharply, her chest rising and falling rapidly. “No,” she whispered, her voice shaky. Kai didn’t give her a chance to escape. He caught her wrist with one hand, pulling her back into him, his lips crashing against hers once again. This time, there was no gentleness—only raw, undeniable force. His kiss was demanding, claiming, as though he was taking something from her. She couldn’t help but respond, her own lips parting under his, her body reacting despite herself. His hand slid down her back, pulling her against him, the heat of his body pressing against hers in a way that made her breath catch. She could feel the hardness of his chest, the strength in his arms, and the weight of his dominance. No, she told herself, don’t let him win like this. But as his tongue slipped into her mouth, she found it impossible to resist. Every kiss, every touch, only seemed to draw her further into his orbit. Her thoughts were a blur—she was no longer sure if she hated him or if she was beginning to crave him. His hands moved lower, tracing the curve of her waist, the contact sending sparks of heat through her veins. For a moment, Lian couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think, could only feel the way his body held hers with unyielding control. And then, just as suddenly as he had pulled her in, Kai broke the kiss, stepping back slightly, his eyes dark with something unreadable. “Do you understand now?” he asked, his voice thick with something dangerous, something possessive. “You can’t fight me, Lian. Not anymore.” She stood there, gasping for air, her body trembling with a mixture of desire and fury. She didn’t know what to say. She didn’t know what to feel. Kai’s eyes softened just slightly, a glimmer of something deeper—something she wasn’t sure she wanted to face. But then, just as quickly, the mask of control was back in place. “You’re mine, Lian,” he repeated, his voice quieter now, but still laced with the same undeniable force. “And you’ll learn to accept that.” Lian wanted to shout, to demand her freedom, to scream that she would never bow to him. But as she looked into his eyes—into the depths of the power he wielded, and the strange, dark pull he had on her—she knew deep down that she wasn’t ready to walk away. Not yet. Not when something was stirring inside of her that she couldn’t ignore
