I tightened my grip on the steering wheel, my fingers tense.
“I can’t be late,” I muttered under my breath, eyes flicking between the road and the time.
My foot pressed harder on the accelerator. I had absolutely no choice.
Suddenly, a car cut across my lane. My foot slammed the break but it was already too late.
I went still at the impact of the car Brenda had given me temporarily crashing with someone else's
“Oh no…no..no..no”
I pushed the door open and stepped out quickly, rushing to inspect the damage.
My stomach clenched. The car had been dented badly.
How do I explain it to Brenda? She was kind enough to have lended me a car. I couldn't depend on public transport or I would go late everyday.
“Madam.”
I raised my head up and saw two large men, their expressions hard.
I froze. Heart hammering against my ribs.
“You’ll have to pay for the damages.” one of them said, voice deep and firm.
My brows shot up immediately. “Excuse me?”
The second man stepped closer, gesturing towards his car “You caused the accident.”
My eyes trailed to the car for the first time,
my breath seized. That car looked crazily expensive.
“You were the one who cut across my lane.”
I crossed my arms defensively
“Please, I'm already late for work. I'm sorry. We're both affected here,” I said with a more urgent voice now.
I walled back to the car door but it was immediately shut close by one of the men.
“You can't leave, how do you compensate for what you've done?”
My hands ran through my hair in utter frustration, I couldn't believe this was happening right now.
I can’t stay,” I added, my voice more urgent now. “I really can’t afford to. You can have my number… we'll figure something out later, okay?”
A lump formed in my throat when I thought about how I was already late.
“Okay, how do I compensate?” I looked back to the car and gulped. I hoped they won't ask monetarily compensations.
The door of the car opened, I froze.
“Max?”
How was he the one in the car?
The child's cute face brightened up on seeing me.
“Riele,” he called excitedly, my heart mushed.
He was looking clean. Well too clean for his age.
I lifted him up the instant he came over.
“How've you been Max?”
His expression dimmed, “Where have you been? Is it true you're no longer my nanny?”
A sigh escaped my lips. Well I was already late, what's the worst that could happen.
An idea struck to me, “Of course I still am. Here's the thing,” I turned to the men who surprisingly did not make any effort to pull Max away from the arms of a Strangerrr?
“These guys are holding me back and I really need to be somewhere like right this instant. Could you tell them to let me go? I didn't mean to crash inuo your car,” I whined, playing the victim.
“Okay I will, would you return soon?” Max asked making my heart quicken. I felt really bad lying to him.
“Of course,” I whispered so the men wouldn't hear me.
At Max's order, the men let me go at once, I was so grateful to Max. I owed him.
I turned, hurried back into my car, and drove off before anyone would change their minds.
By the time I reached the office, my nerves were shot. I rushed through the receptionist who gave me that look. A disapproving one.
I couldn't blame her, how could I explain what transpired? It was just such an unfortunate stuff.
“Hold on,” two receptionist called me back.
“Are you from the promotion department?”
I nodded, wondering why she had asked.
She shook her head. My brows drew together but I had no time to bother with her anymore.
I walked with hastened steps.
But on arriving my quarters, there wasn't anyone present.
Only the sounds of papers flying gently, trying to be free from it's bind.
I frowned.
“Where'd they all go?”
I rushed back to the receptionist, knowing she must have known something as to the reason she asked my department.
“The CEO just called for a meeting with the promotion team. You're toast,” she revealed and went back to hitting the keyboards.
My stomach tightened at her words.
I couldn't believe this was happening. What sort of bad luck was this? Infact, I'm i even sure i won't get fired today.
I headed to the meeting room after asking for directions.
I looked around, the hall was silent. I wondered if messed up the directions.
Sounds of shoe clicking on the polished floor made me turn around.
My brows shot in surprise.
“Mr Xavier?”
He walked with maximum composure, a man trailing alongside him.
He stopped in front of me, my breath seized.
His hands moved to his pocket.
“Mr-Mr Xavier,” I breathed out, not expecting that I would come across him again so soon.
I wondered, what type of coincidence was this? How could I come across father and son within the same space of time.
Xavier's eyes trailed over to her badge that signified she was a member of the company.
“Quit your job,” he suddenly said, the words blunt.
I blinked.
“I’m sorry….what?”
“The pay will be ten times your current salary,” he continued.
I stared at him. Was this Max's father being serious right now?”
Before I could respond, the man beside him stepped forward and extended a check toward me.
Without a word I glanced down at it, the amount was…. immense.
“I am not interested,” I was irked, wanting to fling the cheque on him. What does he take me for and who in the world does he think he is?
His icy gaze had me shrinking back.
“Sleep on it,” he said firmly.
He strode towards an elevator. I furrowed, that was an executive only.
A shocking statement came in from behind, “that's the CEO.”
