THE UNINVITED VISITOR

‎ ‎By Monday morning, the fragile, unspoken dynamic within Group C had shifted violently from a cold war to an uncomfortable, high-alert state of absolute panic. The catalyst for their collective dread wasn't a sudden spike in Mr. Harrison's grading rubric or a new tracking algorithm on the local gossip pages. The reason was sitting squarely in the very back row of third-period Advanced Trigonometry: a wealthy, dangerous new transfer student named Jax Prescott. ‎Jax was everything the local boys of Oakridge High fundamentally weren't-polished, effortlessly charming, and sporting an Italian leather jacket that undoubtedly cost more than Melvin's entire home computer setup and external server racks combined. He had officially transferred from an elite, ultra-exclusive private academy in the city, and within two short hours of crossing the threshold of the building, he had already aligned himself perfectly with Chloe Vance's popular, predatory crowd. ‎But more importantly, and far more dangerously, Jax had spent the entirety of first and third period staring fixedly at the side of Gabriella's face. ‎"He's a corporate spy, I'm telling you," Melvin whispered aggressively during their lunch break, shoving a raw carrot stick into his mouth like it was a personal insult to his intelligence. The five of them were sitting tightly together at their designated table in the furthest, darkest corner of the cafeteria-a low-traffic location Liu had selected with executive precision for maximum operational privacy. "I deep-searched his social media footprint during homeroom. His father is a major commercial real estate developer in the city. He's probably only here to steal our high-frequency vector-mapping dataset for some multi-million dollar commercial project." ‎"Melvin, it's a high school trigonometry portfolio, not the nuclear launch codes," Liu sighed heavily, though her sharp eyes were narrowed to tiny slits as she watched Jax from across the crowded room. He was currently surrounded by a laughing court of varsity cheerleaders, but his cool green eyes were locked onto their specific table. "But he is a massive structural disruption. Chloe is already trying to use him as a human wedge to test our group's unified front." ‎"He looks like an absolute tool," Liam grunted, tearing a massive piece of turkey from his sandwich with an aggressive snap of his jaw. He ran a hand over his athletic frame, his broad shoulders tensing under his jersey. "He came up to me at my gym locker today and asked if the legendary 'Full House' was really as fragile as everyone on the internet says. I told him if he came anywhere near our data logs, I'd use him as a permanent tackling dummy for the rest of the season." ‎Gabriella didn't say a single word. She was staring down at her phone screen, her fingers frozen over the glass, but she could feel the heavy, oppressive, and dangerously hot weight of Garvey's gaze from the very end of the long table. Garvey hadn't touched a single bite of his food. He was aggressively, rhythmically tracing a deep circle onto the scuffed styrofoam tray with the sharp tip of a plastic fork, his large knuckles turned completely white under his skin. ‎"He's coming over," Gabriella whispered suddenly, her entire body stiffening as a wave of pure static rushed through her veins. ‎The ambient cafeteria noise seemed to dip significantly as Jax Prescott detached himself from the popular table and strolled casually across the scuffed linoleum floor. He carried himself with a lazy, predatory confidence that instantly made Liam shift his weight to his feet and caused the plastic fork in Garvey's hand to snap completely in half with a sharp crack. ‎"Hey, guys," Jax said, stopping right at the edge of their table. He ignored the three boys completely, his smooth, bright green eyes fixing directly on Gabriella with a charming, practiced smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Gabriella, right? I'm Jax. I'm in Harrison's third-period block, and I couldn't help but notice your group's vector mapping is absolutely incredible. I was wondering if you'd want to grab coffee after school today? I could really use some personal help catching up on the dynamic load formulas." ‎The tension at the table turned instantly, violently radioactive. ‎Liam half-stood from his seat, his fists clenching, but Liu caught his jersey sleeve with lightning speed, pulling him back down into his chair with an icy, warning glare. Melvin looked like he was about to pass out directly into his chocolate pudding cup. ‎Gabriella opened her mouth to decline-the absolute last thing she needed in her life was more social drama-but before she could utter a single syllable past her lips, Garvey stood up. ‎He didn't scramble his chair back or make a loud scene. He rose with a slow, lethal grace that made him look twice as large and twice as dangerous as he actually was in the dim cafeteria light. He stepped smoothly around the table, positioning his broad body directly between Jax and Gabriella, blocking her entirely from the new kid's view. His heavy chest stopped a mere inch from Jax's leather shoulder. ‎"She's busy," Garvey said. His deep voice dropped into a low, gravelly vibration that carried an edge of pure, unadulterated steel, making several nearby student tables go completely quiet to watch. ‎Jax didn't flinch. He slowly raised an eyebrow, his smile turning highly amused as he evaluated Garvey up and down with an elite, dismissive air. "And you are? Her keeper?" ‎"I'm her partner," Garvey said, the word carrying a heavy, double meaning from their childhood that made Gabriella's breath catch completely in her throat. He reached back without looking, his large, warm hand unerringly finding Gabriella's wrist where it rested on the laminate table, his long fingers squeezing firmly against her racing pulse. "And Group C doesn't share data with outsiders. If you want help with your formulas, Prescott, ask Harrison. Otherwise, walk back to your own table before this gets messy." ‎Jax evaluated Garvey for a long, silent, suffocating three seconds, the air between them practically cracking with masculine hostility and old secrets. Then, Jax slowly raised his hands in a mock gesture of surrender, his green eyes sliding past Garvey's shoulder to throw a slow wink at Gabriella. ‎"No trouble, man," Jax smiled, his tone light but entirely full of dark promise. "Just asking a simple question. See you in class, Gabriella." ‎As Jax sauntered away back toward Chloe's waiting entourage, the cafeteria chatter exploded back to life like a wall of sound. Garvey didn't sit back down. He abruptly released Gabriella's wrist, leaving her skin burning where his fingers had just been. His face was a terrifying mask of dark, unreadable fury as he turned on his heel and marched out of the cafeteria double doors without looking back a single time. ‎"Well," Liu whispered, shaking her head as she watched the heavy doors swing shut on his exit. "The narrative just got a whole lot more complicated." ‎
