By Friday morning, the forced truce of Group C was being put to its ultimate, agonizing test.
Oakridge High's main hallway was a chaotic, suffocating gauntlet of pre-weekend energy. Heavy metal lockers were slamming shut with rhythmic, deafening thuds; groups of seniors were shouting over the din to finalize plans for the evening football game; and the digital rumor mill was working absolute overtime.
Gabriella walked down the main corridor, her phone vibrating continuously against the palm of her hand like a trapped insect. Every vibration felt like a warning lyric. She unlocked the screen, her eyes stinging as she stared at the latest anonymous notification from the local gossip page:
Oakridge_Confessions: Spotted: The old 'Full House' crew working together at Thorne's house yesterday. Are they actually fixing the ancient high school feud, or is this just a tactical alliance to pass Harrison's trig class? Sources say things got heated on the back porch... 👀🔥 #FullHouseWar #GroupCDrama
"They're tracking us like wild animals," Liu muttered, appearing out of the sea of neon backpacks and walking directly at Gabriella's side. Her sharp eyes were fixed on her digital tablet, her fingers flying across the glass screen with mechanical precision. "Chloe's friends are actively monitoring our social media footprints. If anyone posts anything out of alignment with our 'reunited childhood friends' narrative, the entire house of cards collapses before we even present the portfolio."
"We're doing our best, Liu," Gabriella said, shoving the buzzing phone into the back pocket of her jeans to stop her hands from shaking. "We spent four straight hours yesterday doing the calculations in the yard. The project data is solid."
"The project data is solid, but the chemistry is highly volatile," Liu countered smoothly, stopping dead in her tracks directly in front of Room 204. She tilted her head toward the doorway. "Look ahead."
Standing near the classroom door was Liam, surrounded by three of his massive varsity football teammates. They were laughing loudly, throwing casual punches at his shoulders, but Liam looked entirely distracted. His eyes were constantly shifting down the hallway, searching the crowd with an anxious flicker. A few feet away, Melvin was leaning heavily against a vending machine, pretending to read a leather-bound chemistry textbook but looking entirely terrified as a couple of popular cheerleaders whispered and giggled in his direction.
And then there was Garvey.
He was leaning casually against his rusted locker, his signature denim jacket back on over his shoulders, his eyes fixed entirely on the scuffed linoleum floorboards. He looked completely isolated-a solitary human island in the middle of a crowded, noisy ocean. But the exact millisecond Gabriella stepped into his line of sight, his head snapped up. His dark brown eyes locked onto hers across the fifty feet of crowded floor, holding her gaze with an unyielding intensity that made the surrounding noise, the slamming lockers, and the entire high school hallway fade into an absolute blur.
"Showtime," Liu whispered under her breath, grabbing Gabriella's elbow and steering her firmly toward the classroom entrance. "Remember: smile, look normal, and don't let a single soul see the structural cracks."
As they reached the doorframe, Chloe Vance stepped out from the adjacent hallway, her expensive designer perfume hitting Gabriella a second before her entourage flanked her. She was wearing her pristine varsity cheer jacket, a massive, predatory smile on her face as she smoothly intercepted them, blocking the doorway.
"Gabriella! Just the person I wanted to see," Chloe chirped, her high-pitched voice carrying easily over the ambient noise of the corridor, causing several nearby students to slow down to watch the drama unfold. "The whole school is talking about your little backyard study session yesterday. I must say, I'm genuinely impressed. I didn't think you'd ever be able to breathe the same oxygen as Garvey Thorne after what happened at the graduation party. Tell me, is he still as... unreliable as he used to be?"
The insult was perfectly engineered to sting. It was designed to provoke the classic Gabriella response-an angry, defensive, volatile outburst that would immediately confirm the rumors of their mutual hatred to the onlookers.
Gabriella felt her jaw tighten, a hot wave of anger rising rapidly in her throat. But before she could force a bitter reply past her lips, a heavy, familiar arm slung casually and securely over her shoulder.
The rich scent of cedarwood and strong black coffee instantly enveloped her, grounding her spinning thoughts. Garvey had moved from his locker, his long, effortless stride bringing him right to her side without a sound. He pulled her slightly against his heavy flank, his arm warm and solid over her shoulders, his long fingers resting casually near her collarbone.
"He's actually very reliable, Chloe," Garvey said. His voice was smooth, carrying a terrifying edge of cold steel that instantly silenced the immediate circle of onlookers. He looked down at Gabriella, a lazy, incredibly tender smile breaking across his handsome face-a look so thoroughly convincing it made Gabriella's heart stop completely in her chest. "In fact, she's the only variable keeping me on track this semester. We're working on a lot of things this year. Structural analysis... among other things."
Chloe's green eyes widened in absolute shock, her gaze dropping instantly to Garvey's large hand resting against Gabriella's neck. The girls standing behind her began texting furiously on their phones.
"Is that right?" Chloe spat, her perfect smile turning incredibly brittle at the edges. "Well, let's see how long the structure holds when the first real storm hits." She turned sharply on her heel and marched into the classroom, her entourage trailing behind her like a turbulent wake.
The moment she disappeared, the hallway traffic resumed its normal flow, but Garvey didn't take his arm off Gabriella's shoulder immediately. He kept her tucked securely against his side for three more seconds, his thumb subtly, deliberately brushing against the soft fabric of her shirt, sending a chaotic wave of heat directly through her skin.
"Thanks," Gabriella whispered, her voice a tiny thread as she looked up at him through her lashes.
Garvey's fake smile instantly vanished, replaced by the guarded, stormy look she had seen under the treehouse the night before. He pulled his arm back quickly, shoving his hand deep into his jacket pocket as he turned away from her toward the classroom door.
"Don't read into it, Vance," he muttered under his breath, his words cutting through her chest like winter air. "It was just for the crowd."
As he walked into Room 204, leaving her standing entirely frozen by the doorframe, Gabriella reached up with trembling fingers to touch the bare skin of her shoulder where his arm had just been. The rumors were controlled for the day, but as the final morning bell began to ring, she knew the real drama wasn't happening in the high school hallways.
It was happening right inside her own chest, and the architecture of her heart was completely, beautifully compromised.
