Chapter Fourteen The two gazed at each other, trying not to speak, but finally the boy couldn’t contain himself, and asked a stupid question. “Are you all right, Miss Kelli?” Then in rapid succession, he asked the second and third stupid questions. “Do you always do what they tell you to do? And, um, could we just talk? We don’t have to do anything else.” The time— the seconds and even the minutes—passed slower than the beating of Homer’s heart, Kelli guessed. Certainly slower than her own. A kind of sublime orneriness gnawed her insides. If she was to be her keepers’ slut, she’d show them a slut. She’d be the best slut they had ever known. Chemicals have a way of subverting inhibitions, and they certainly add brashness to boldness. And, furthermore, Kelli was drowning in chemicals.
