CHAPTER FIVE

1247 Words
Matilda’s pov “Hey! More drinks at our table” a man with overgrown hair on his face yelled from the front of the bar. “Why’s she so slow?!” Another followed in frustration. “Tilda…” Ellie, my fellow coworker, rubbed my back. “What's the problem?” I groaned in pain. Ever since the fifth month of my pregnancy I’ve been having a random surge of pain either below my stomach or on my back. And today, it’s both. “Do you need to sit down?” Ellie offered me a chair but I refused. “No, no,” I lift my head trying to suck in enough pain. “I just need air.” I told her as I walked out through the back door. “Cover for me, okay? I’ll be right back.” Ellie smiled and I closed the door behind me. Once I’m finally outside I let out a loud groan and placed my hand under my stomach. Something’s wrong. It’s not supposed to hurt this much. It’s like my child is trying to claw its way out of my stomach. “Matilda…” I froze instantly. No one here has ever called me by my full name. Adonis, the Lycan king, gave strict instructions to call me Tilda because he didn’t like the fact that I bore a name that meant I was a strong woman in the face of troubles, so he shortened it. According to him he was putting me in my place. I turned slowly. And to my greatest fear and surprise I see a very familiar figure standing behind me. His eyes were wide, chest rising too fast. Luke. And this time it wasn’t a fragment of my imagination or a dream. It was real. My wolf howled within me, craving his touch. “Matilda, I–” “What are you doing here?!” I snapped, cutting him off. I straightened my back despite the ache I still felt. “Get out.” “Oh thank the moon,” he breathes. He tried to walk up to me but I stopped him. “If you come any closer, I’ll scream.” “You’re alive.” I let out a laugh, it was short and better. “Disappointed?” His face fell. “Why would I be? Matilda, I thought you were dead. I searched everywhere for you…” “Oh really?” I felt my blood begin to boil. “You abandoned me! You rejected me Luke, like I was nothing! How can anyone do that to someone they claimed to love?” My voice broke with every word that left my mouth. “Matilda–” “No,” I cut him off, anger pushing past the pain I felt. “You don’t get to say my name like you still own it. Go away Luke.” I turned to leave but he stepped in front of my path. “Matilda you don’t understand, I never planned for any of that to happen….I just did what I had to.” “And that meant rejecting me? Luke, you never loved me…” His gaze dropped before it flickered to my stomach. He swallowed hard. “That’s not true.” He whispered, turning away. “But yet Roses stands by your side—” “Not by choice!” He added. “And not refused by you either.” He placed his hands over his ears as if trying to hold back tears. “You don’t understand, but let me explain everything to you.” I shook my head as I backed away from him. “I don’t need your explanation, Luke.” I trace his eyes that’s still locked on my stomach. “And neither does my child.” “Alpha Luke…what are you doing—” Adolfo appeared from behind him. Alpha Luke…. I put two and two together and I scoffed. “So that was the reason you went for a legitimate daughter right? To secure your seat as Alpha.” “Matilda?” Adolfo gasped. “That’s not it. If you just come back–” Luke said, his eyes drenched in tears. “Come back!” I cut him off. “You think me being alive changes anything? Luke, you used me! You stood there shoulders broad and face blank as you held Roses like she was the one you held that night before.” Adolfo finally noticed my stomach and he held his hand over his mouth. “You’re carrying his child? You’re carrying an heir!” “It’s my child, and I don’t plan on taking him back to that place.” I clutched my stomach. My wolf whined at my words, as if trying to tell me she knows I’m lying. “Matilda you shouldn’t be out here like this,” his voice broke. “Come back with me. Let me take you home.” “Matilda, do it for your child, if not for anyone else but for the baby you carry. That pup won’t survive under harsh circumstances like this, I can already tell you’re near your due date.” Adolfo said, maintaining eye contact with me. He was right, I was almost due and with these hard conditions I would either lose the baby or die giving birth to it. But my stubbornness and the hatred that grew within me over the months wouldn’t let me agree to that truth. Luke starts walking toward me. “I don’t deserve your apology or your love or even appreciation from you, but please Matilda, for your pup, for the life inside you.” I stared at him, really looked at him this time. He hadn’t changed a bit, I mean I wasn’t surprised he didn’t, it had only been six months. The only difference between how he looks now and how he looked the last time I saw him is the guilt that clouds his eyes, the fear, and even a hint of hope he had the audacity to have. After everything I had been through, he still thinks he can fix it? I exhaled slowly. “And if Roses and my stepfather refuses?” “My judgment is final, I am the Alpha and what I say is Amen.” His shoulders broaden and his chin goes up. That’s the Luke I remember. “Fine.” I said simply. Both heads snapped up. “You will?” Aldofo asked again. Luke was too stunned to speak. “Yes,” I repeated again, holding eye contact with Luke. “I’ll come back, but only for the baby. Once this child is born I have no business in the pack.” “Yes, yes, of course.” Relief flooded Luke’s face. “That’s more than okay, Matilda.” I hate how hearing my name from his mouth still makes my heart flutter. “Adolfo, turn the horses around, we’re going back.” “But the meeting…” “Is not as important as this. Tell the guards to turn around now.” He ordered Adolfo. I watched quietly as they both moved restlessly. I didn’t lie when I said I’d leave once the child was born but that wasn’t the full truth either. I’m going back to take what rightfully belonged to me, my title I’m going to claim back what was taken form my unborn child, and I don’t care who stands in my way.
