Chapter 10

My heart jumped to my throat. I dropped my bag and rushed into their room, but they were nowhere to be found. Only the cat meowed when she saw me. “Oh my goodness, where are these kids?” I asked myself, trying to think. “Did Samara take them out for coffee? But she would have told me” I swatted the thought away, grabbed my phone and tried to call Samara. Suddenly, I felt something hugging my legs. “Munmy!” When I turned, I saw Cairo hugging my legs. Relief washed over me, and I frowned, angry at them. “Where did you two go?” I asked, crouching in front of Cairo. “Did you know I almost died from fright? Don’t ever do that again!” Cairo immediately lowered his head. “Sorry, Mommy.” Asher walked out of the hallway carrying a small flashlight. “We didn’t mean to scare you,” he said softly. “The lights went out, and we heard a noise outside.” “A noise?” I repeated. The twins exchanged a glance. “We thought someone was stealing from the farm,” Cairo admitted. I blinked. “You thought someone was stealing from the farm?” “Yes,” he answered proudly. “So we went to investigate.” My jaw nearly dropped. “You what?” The boys flinched. “We were being brave,” Asher muttered. “You were being reckless!” I exclaimed, pulling both of them closer. “What if something happened to you? What if you got lost? What if someone took you away?” Their eyes widened. The anger drained from me as quickly as it came. I wrapped my arms around them and held them tightly. Neither of them spoke. “Please don’t do that again,” I whispered. “You two are all I have.” “Sorry, Mommy,” they mumbled together. I kissed both of their foreheads. “Now tell me. What were you really doing outside?” The twins suddenly brightened. “There was a girl!” Cairo blurted. “A little girl,” Asher corrected. “She fell near the fence. So, we helped her up.” “She was crying a lot. She said she wasn’t feeling well.” My stomach tightened. “Where is she now?” “We took her home,” Asher said, casually. “Home?” I frowned. “Where is her home?” “The big house on the hill,” Cairo said, pointing towards the end of the area. “The Alpha’s estate,” Asher added. I froze. The Alpha’s estate? “What are you two talking about? The girl was from the Alpha estate?” I stared at my sons for a long moment, my heart still racing. Asher nodded like it was the most normal thing in the world. The twins nodded enthusiastically. “The girl was really nice,” Cairo continued. She said she wanted to meet you.” “The girl said her daddy is very important,” Cairo added. “So we helped her go back home safely.” A strange unease crawled up my spine. “You didn’t go inside the house, did you?” I asked quickly. The boys shook their heads. “No,” Asher said. “A man came out and carried her inside.” My chest tightened. “What man?” Cairo shrugged. “Tall. Scary face. But he said thank you.” I froze. A tall man. Scary face. Alpha estate. Something about it felt… wrong. But I pushed it away immediately. It was probably nothing—just a coincidence. “And she invited us to visit again,” Asher added, smiling. I stared at them. They looked happy. It must have been nice for them to meet a friend right away when they got here. However, I was sceptical. For some reason, an uneasy feeling settled deep inside my chest. I didn’t know why. Maybe it was because I had just arrived. Still, I pulled both of them closer. “Listen to me,” I said firmly. “You are never to go near that estate again. Do you understand me?” “But Mommy—” Cairo started. “No ifs and buts, Cairo” They both nodded slowly. “Promise me.” “We promise,” they said in unison. I exhaled, finally calming my racing heart. “Good,” I whispered. “Now go unpack properly. I need to rest.” They ran off, still whispering to each other like little conspirators. I stood there for a moment, watching them disappear down the hallway. Then I turned toward my room. But just as my hand touched the door handle, my phone rang. Unknown number. I frowned. Very few people had my direct line. I hesitated… then answered. “Hello?” A deep male voice spoke. Cold. Controlled. Familiar in a way that made my breath catch. “Dr Westmore.” My fingers tightened around the phone. “Yes… who is this?” “You’ve already met my daughter.” “…What?” My blood ran cold. Before I could say anything else, he added coldly. “This is Alpha Damian Mikaelson.” The world stopped, I felt a chill ran down my spine. And before I could respond, he added, “I expect you at the hospital tomorrow morning.” Click. The line went dead. Seriously? Who the hell was that?
