“Please help her! Save her, please!” I yelled, rushing into the hospital.
The nurses and doctors rushed forward, and they took the patient from my hands.
“Alpha Damien, please wait outside. We will take it from here,” The doctor said while the ward boys wheeled my sick daughter away.
I waited outside while they attended to her.
The wait was ripping my heart out, as I wondered what was going on in the emergency room.
I couldn't afford to lose her; she's everything I've got, and I'm willing to do anything to save her.
“Damien, I heard what happened. How is she doing?” My beta, Leo, walked in and patted my shoulder, comforting me.
“I dont know what's going on in that room”, I muttered, my voice cracking with pain.
“Dont worry, she will be fine,” Leo said, “Aveline is a strong girl, she will put up a good fight”
I nodded and kept pacing around. My heart was on the verge of ripping out of my chest.
A little while later, the doctor walked out of the emergency room, and I ran to him.
“Doctor, how is my daughter? Is she better now?” I asked, and the doctor’s face dropped.
“Alpha Damien, your daughter is out of danger for now, but —” He hesitated, and I knew it was bad.
“But what, doctor? Tell me,” I urged.
“We’ve done everything we can, Alpha Damien”, the doctor said, and my heart flipped. “We have to do the surgery as soon as possible, and there is only one surgeon who can successfully carry out the procedure”
“Then, why aren’t you doing the surgery? Call the surgeon and get to work immediately,” I barked, vibrating with rage.
How dare he play games with my daughter’s life?
“It’s not that easy, Alpha”, the doctor muttered, and I frowned.
“Why not?” I asked. “Is it because of the money? Why isn’t it easy? If there is someone who can help my daughter, please get them here immediately”
I could feel anger rising in my chest, but I tried to control myself. As an alpha, it’s not a good look to display in public.
“I tried to get in touch with her, but she was too busy to come down here”, he said, and my anger became hotter.
“What?” I exclaimed, clenching my fists. “How could she do that? My daughter’s life is in danger”
“I understand what you’re going through, alpha, but she’s the best we have right now, and everyone wants her to take on their case”
“Let me talk to her, to the hospital where she works. I will change her mind,” I desperately said.
“There is no need, I have sent a message to the hospital where she works, and they promised to get back to me in a day or two”, the doctor informed me.
“Whatever she wants, give it to her. I don’t mind tripling her fees, I need her down here in not more than a week or two,” I ordered, and the doctor nodded.
The doctor nodded and said. “I will do everything I can.”
“Can I see my daughter now?” I asked, and the doctor agreed.
“She’s stable, and the nurses have rolled her to her room. You can go see her”, he told me.
I dashed into the room where my daughter was with Leo, walking behind me.
When I got there, I saw Aveline lying on the bed. She looked pale, and all colour had been drained from her eyes.
“Daddy,” she called out, stretching her hand, and I took it and sat down in front of her bed.
I squeezed her small hand gently and kissed her knuckles.
“Are you crying, daddy?” She asked. “Do alphas cry? I haven’t heard of that!” She says, trying to cheer me up.
“Who told you I had been crying?” I asked, lying. “I had something in my eyes while I was waiting for you to regain consciousness. Besides, nothing can make an alpha cry, right?”
Aveline smiled, nodding.
“That’s my good girl!” I kissed her forehead.
She tugged at my shirt, staring into my eyes as if to assure me that she was okay.
It broke my heart that she had to worry about me while she was going through a lot herself.
“Daddy, I’m sorry, I made you worry”, Aveline mouthed, and I looked at her helplessly.
“Don’t apologise, baby, you did nothing wrong” I patted her back and hugged her. “I will not stop until you recover. Daddy promised”
“I love you, Daddy!” Aveline said, and I melted.
“I love you so much, my little princess”
She was a lovely girl; she didn’t deserve any of the pain she was going through. I was determined to help her through this.
The door burst open, and someone walked in.
I turned to look, and my brows knitted when I saw who it was.
“Baby, get some rest. I will go get you your favourite meal, alright?” I said and made her lie down, kissing her forehead before I stood up.
Standing up, I gripped the arm of the intruder and dragged her outside.
“What are you doing here, Marice?” I demanded.
“Relax, Damien,” Marice said. “I’m here for Aveline. She’s my daughter, too”
“Daughter?” I scoffed. “She’s not your daughter, she’s my daughter. If she were your daughter, you wouldn’t have left her alone and gone out shopping instead”
“I’m sorry, Damien.” Marice tried to touch my face, but I dodged. “I thought Ave would be safe with her nanny, that’s why I went out with my friend who came to see me, I wasn’t out there shopping, we just had coffee”
“You should have thought of Aveline before stepping out like that”, I said. I wasn’t angry anymore. “What if something had happened to her?”
“You’re right, I was reckless with our daughter’s life, and I will never forgive myself for what I did”, Marice said apologetically. She looked genuinely concerned, and I was forced to let it go.
“It’s okay,” I mouthed. “Aveline is everything I have left. Please don’t do that again”
“I promise,” Marice said, tiptoed and kissed my cheeks. I shifted.
“I’m going out with Leo, watch Aveline for me. Her nanny will be here soon,” I said and walked away.
I couldn’t stay in the same place with Marice right now. I’m not in the mood to entertain her.
