Chapter 006

We got to the coffee shop across the hospital and sat down. “I got the surgeon’s contact information from Dr Carrington. I sent her an email, I’m sure she would be forced to come if more people contacted her,” Leo said, sitting in front of me. I knew he was saying this to ease my tension, but nothing can help me until Aveline undergoes the surgery and recovers. “Thank you,” I muttered without raising my head. “What for? That was nothing!” Leo said, and I smiled. “By the way, any update on the she-wolf from that night?” I asked, my mind drifting back to the girl from years ago. “I’m sorry, Damien, I don’t have good news for you”, Leo said, and I nodded. It’s been like this for years. “It seems like the girl disappeared from the world after that night. We’ve traced her everywhere, but nobody knows who she was. And the fact that you didn’t know her name made things more complicated” “I understand, but I need you to keep looking out for her. I have a feeling we will find her soon,” I said. “Damien, it’s been how many years?” Leo asked. “I don’t think she’s coming back. Besides, what if she has moved on with her life? You should do the same” “I’m not asking for your advice, Leo”, I coldly said, and Leo flinched. “I asked you to find someone, and you do as you are told!” He should be grateful he was my best friend. If it were anyone else, I would have them lashed for invalidating me like that. “I’m sorry, I spoke out of line,” Leo apologised. “Let’s go back, I’m taking Aveline home while we wait for the surgeon” I stood up and walked ahead of Leo, who looked ashamed. This was the first time I had scolded him; he must have felt bad, but I wasn’t going to apologise to him yet. He knew how much that woman meant to me; I didn’t expect him to say that. I may be looking for a pin in the middle of a beach, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t forget that woman, and I was determined to find her. When I returned to Aveline’s room, her nanny was there with Marice. The doctor discharged her, and I took her into the car while Leo drove. Marice was sitting in the back with Aveline and me. The drive home was quiet. I couldn’t take my eyes off my daughter. My heart broke seeing her forehead covered in cold sweat; she was suffering. Her heart condition had worsened over the last couple of days. She was diagnosed with the condition a few months after she was born, and ever since, I’ve been trying to get her cured to no avail. But I couldn’t find a surgeon who could perform the surgery successfully. I hope this new surgeon agrees to take on her case. I can’t imagine the pain she was going through; it breaks my heart. When we got home, I dropped Ave on her bed. She was sleeping already, so I covered her with a blanket. The nanny stayed with her while I went to my home office to work. I sat down the moment I stepped into my office, pulled out my laptop and poured myself a drink. I worked on the pending emails I had received while gulping my drink. I’ve had such a long and hard day, a glass of liquor would lighten my mood, and I went for it. Once I finished my work, I pulled open my drawer, and I accidentally flung out a charm. It was a girl’s hair charm. It was the same charm the girl from the night six years ago was wearing. She must have left it behind by mistake, and I happened to get my hands on it. I picked up the charm and stared at it, holding it close to my chest. When I woke up after the wild night six years ago, the girl, who was bold enough to ask me to spend the night with her, was gone. For some reason, I felt like she'd left a piece of me behind, and I wanted to find her and retrieve whatever she'd taken from me. I looked for her everywhere, but no one could tell me who she was. I had no name or face attached to the person I was looking for, so it was complicated. I wanted to stay back with the Silverlake pack to look for her thoroughly, but I unfortunately had to return to my pack. There was an emergency that needed my attention, so I left. When I came back to Silverlake after three months, it was too late; her scent on the charm was gone, and no one could identify her. All I had was a charm; it was nothing special. It’s been six years, and I'm still hung up on her, still searching for her. Leo had been tracing her, but there were still no leads, and I was losing patience. Maybe Leo was right. She might have moved on, and here I was, looking for a woman I met for a brief moment. We both agreed to have s*x, and that was all it was to her. Maybe I’m looking for a pin on the beach. In the end, I can’t help my heart and the way my wolf, Daerion, feels. I got up and walked to the window. I looked out and saw it was already dark outside. “We will find her soon, Damien”, I heard my wolf, Daerion, ask me. “How are you sure? We’ve been holding on to nothing for six years.” I scoffed, and Daerion got mad. “Why am I even talking to you? You’re always so pessimistic about everything. Suit yourself!” Daerion yelled and retreated to the back of my mind. “Daerion?” I called out, and he refused to answer. I let him be, walked out of the office, and went to my room. Suddenly, I felt someone hugging me from behind. “I miss you so much, Damien”, Marice purred, and I turned to look at her. Before I could speak, she tiptoed and crashed her lips onto mine, kissing me hungrily. I kissed her back, and before I knew it, we were on my bed, f*****g.
