Chapter 45

733 Words
The morning light slipped through the curtains in faint streaks, brushing over my skin like it was trying to wake me. I stirred against the warmth beside me, the steady rhythm of Devon’s breathing filling the silence. My body ached in the sweetest way, a reminder of how much we had given each other the night before. I shifted and his arm tightened around me instantly, pulling me back against his chest. His lips found the curve of my shoulder, lazy at first, almost like he wasn’t even awake yet, but the heat of it made my breath catch. “You’re not leaving this bed,” he murmured, voice rough from sleep. “I wasn’t planning to,” I whispered, though my heart was racing already. He rolled me onto my back, his weight pressing me into the sheets, and I could see in his eyes that the hunger hadn’t eased with the night—it had only sharpened. His mouth claimed mine, not soft this time but fierce, almost desperate, and my fingers tangled in his hair as if holding him closer would calm the storm burning between us. The kiss deepened until I was gasping, until I forgot where the night had ended and this morning began. His hands moved over me, reverent and possessive all at once, like he was relearning every inch of me even though he had already traced me countless times. When his lips left mine they traveled down, slow enough to make me shiver but urgent enough to remind me this wasn’t going to stay gentle for long. My back arched into him, the sheets twisting under me, and for a moment all I could hear was my own heartbeat thundering in my ears. “Devo” I breathed his name like a plea, but he silenced me with another kiss, this one softer, lingering. “I can’t seem to get enough of you,” he admitted against my lips, and the honesty in his voice broke something open in me. The room felt too small for the fire between us, so when he lifted me from the bed, I didn’t resist. My legs wrapped around him as he carried me to the wall, pressing me there with a growl low in his throat. The contrast of the cool surface at my back and his heat pressing into me made me dizzy, made me forget the world beyond the four walls of his room. Every movement was hungry, as he thrust into me deep and hard. I screamed and he groaned with pleasure with each thrust that seemed to take me higher. The pleasure seemed to take me higher and my skin burned a sweet burn. Devon groaned in between leaving soft kisses all over my body. "f**k, Addy, come for me". I moaned loudly and the smell of ash filled the room. I'd burned the carpet. We stumbled back toward the bed, laughter breaking through the breathless kisses when we almost tripped. It was ridiculous, messy, and it made the intensity of what came next burn even hotter. He laid me down again, hovering above me, eyes dark and unreadable. “You’re mine,” he said, but it wasn’t a command, it was a vow, one that wrapped around my heart as tightly as his body wrapped around mine. I answered him with my hands, my lips, my everything, pouring all the trust and need I had into him. Time blurred. Morning light became golden fire, and the world outside the room ceased to exist. By the time we finally stilled, tangled in the sheets and in each other, my body felt like it had been remade, and so did my heart. He pulled me close, his chest rising and falling against my cheek, and for the first time in so long, I felt like I belonged. But even in that perfect silence, a flicker of doubt crept in. Happiness this strong always felt fragile, like it could shatter without warning. I buried my face against him, as if I could hide from the thought, and his hand stroked my hair slowly, grounding me. “We’ll face everything together,” he whispered, as if he knew what shadows I was fighting. I wanted to believe him. And in that moment, with his arms around me and his warmth seeping into my bones, I almost did.
