Chapter 12

1063 Words
Devon had called for a meeting with the council elders to address the constant attacks from rogues. They needed to figure out why the rogues kept coming. “Baby, this meeting is going to take a while. Do you want to come with me?” He wanted me to accompany him. But I wouldn’t. Not with the way the pack had been acting towards me. When Devon was showing me around, I was greeted politely and with smiles. The only one showing open hatred is Levi. Their warmth feels like a mask, one that slips the moment Devon isn’t looking. “I’ll be fine with Joey. Besides, if I’m there I’ll only distract you,” I told him, trying to assure him that I was okay staying back. Inside, though, I wondered if the elders would bring my name up at the meeting. The thought twisted in my stomach. “I’ll be distracted either way. When you’re with me, I’ll only focus on you. When you’re not, I’ll miss you.” He gave me that look again, the one that said he was leaving his heart behind. I’d never had anyone show me the kind of love and affection he has, and sometimes it frightened me, how quickly he’d become my entire world. I leaned up to kiss his cheek, but he turned and pulled me into him, hands in my hair, tilting my head to the side. He stole my breath with a searing kiss, leaving me dizzy. I wrapped my arms around his neck and my legs around his waist. He pressed me against the wall, swallowing my moans as I ground against him, every nerve in my body screaming for more. He pulled away slowly, almost painfully, and rested his forehead against mine. Then he kissed my nose, my eyelids, my cheeks, and finally my lips. I giggled like a teenager. I’d never felt so light before, so free. “I’ll be back soon, baby. I promise.” He gave me one last kiss before we untangled ourselves. He adjusted his pants, taking deep breaths so the bulge wouldn’t be as visible, before leaving for the meeting. His shoulders were tense, though, and I knew he didn’t like leaving me alone. Just as he left, Joey walked up to me. I hadn’t even realized she was here. That meant she must have heard us. Oh my gosh. I was so embarrassed. My cheeks burned hot. “It’s okay, Luna. You’re mates, and you haven’t even completed the bond yet. That’s why it keeps pushing you to each other and making you feel like this. It’s completely normal.” She smiled kindly, her voice soft, like she understood something I didn’t. “Really?” I hadn’t known that. There was still so much I didn’t know about our kind, and every day it became more obvious. “Joey, what do you think they’ll talk about at the meeting?” I asked, more from fear than curiosity. I was scared they might vote to throw me out of the pack straight into the rogues’ hands. “Since you’re the Luna, I’ll tell you what I overheard from the elders.” She stopped walking, glanced around, and leaned closer like she was spilling the biggest secret ever. “I heard an elder say they’ll invite a witch more specifically, a seer to find out the cause of the attacks.” She leaned back, watching me with her sea-blue eyes, waiting for my response. But I didn’t hate her for them. They fit her well, especially with her shoulder-length hair. It was dyed pink, but her roots had grown out enough for me to tell she was naturally blonde. She had this boldness about her that made her stand out, and I began to wonder why she was being so kind to me when so many others weren’t. “Luna, what do you think?” “I’ve never really met a witch before, so I don’t know...” I replied, bowing my head shyly. This was why I hadn’t wanted to go with Devon. If one of the elders had asked me this question, I’d have embarrassed him with an answer like that. My insecurities clung to me like a second skin, no matter how hard I tried to shake them. “Hey, don’t do that. Be more confident. You’re the Luna now, and that means you have power over these people. Use it. Devon told me what happened, and I already taught those jealous bitches a lesson. You don’t have to worry about them anymore.” I looked up, shocked that she had defended me. I’d never had anyone stand up for me before. Her loyalty wasn’t something I’d expected, and it shook me. She was right. If I kept acting weak, everyone would think it was okay to trample on me. I’d only been here a week, but I’d already gained some weight which was good. Though not much, considering I felt sick if I ate too much. But thanks to Joey and Devon, I wanted to grow stronger. I wanted to become a Luna everyone would love, respect, and maybe even fear. For the first time, I felt the spark of determination. “Joey, can you take me to the training grounds? I want to learn how to fight.” I remembered the last time I’d been there, when someone challenged me. I didn’t know what had come over me when I accepted, but I ended up on my back until Devon returned and stopped it. “That’s the spirit.” Joey smiled widely, proud of me. “It will be an honor to teach my Luna how to kick some ass.” She grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the training grounds. Her excitement felt contagious. As soon as we got there, the warriors were already training. And it was Levi who was leading them. I thought he would be with Devon at the meeting, being his Beta. Why was he here? Suspicion curled in my chest, but I pushed it down for now. Joey led me to an isolated area, away from everyone. It was as though she knew I didn’t want the pack to see me acting weak. Still, I could feel Levi’s eyes on me, sharp and watchful, and I knew this was only the beginning.
