Chapter 13

Joey guided me to a quiet corner of the training grounds, away from the main group. The sun was high, casting shadows that danced across the dirt floor, and the smell of sweat and leather hung heavy in the air. I took a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. “First rule of fighting,” Joey said, her voice serious but encouraging, “don’t panic. Fear will make you sloppy. Focus on your stance and balance.” She demonstrated a simple pose feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, hands ready to strike or block. I tried to copy her, wobbling a little. “Like this?” “Better,” she said, adjusting my arms. “Now, let’s start with the basics punches and kicks. Don’t hold back, but don’t hurt yourself either. You have to know your limits.” We began slowly. Joey threw gentle punches, and I mirrored her movements. My arms ached quickly, and I stumbled more than once. But each time, she corrected me patiently, showing me how to shift my weight, how to use my legs for power, and how to keep my guard up. After a few minutes, she nodded. “Now we move to sparring." My stomach flipped. “Sparring? With you?” “Yes. You can do this,” she said, smiling. “Pretend I’m an enemy like one of the rogues. Don’t hold back. Trust your instincts.” The first few exchanges were clumsy. I blocked poorly and barely managed to land a punch, while Joey moved like lightning, striking just fast enough to make me react. My heart raced, adrenaline pulsing in my veins, but I noticed something shifting I wasn’t as afraid as before. Every time I got hit, Joey would pause to encourage me, reminding me to breathe and refocus. “Good! Again!” she shouted after I landed a solid hit on her shoulder by accident. “See? You’re learning already.” Time seemed to stretch. I was sweating, muscles burning, but I felt alive stronger than I ever had. With each strike, each dodge, I felt more confident. My mind wasn’t just thinking about surviving anymore; it was strategizing, predicting, anticipating. I could feel the power inside me, waiting to be shaped. After nearly an hour, we collapsed on the grass, laughing and gasping for air. Joey ruffled my hair. “Not bad for your first day, Luna. You’ve got potential.” I smiled, exhausted but exhilarated. “I can’t believe I’m saying this…but I want to get even stronger.” She grinned. “That’s the spirit. And trust me, the pack and maybe even Levi will start noticing your strength soon enough.” Just then, I caught a glimpse of Levi watching us from across the training grounds, his expression unreadable. My pulse quickened. He was always on edge around me, and I wondered what he was thinking. But for the first time, I didn’t feel small or powerless. I felt ready. “Tomorrow, we’ll work on speed and reflexes,” Joey said, standing and stretching. “By the end of the week, you’ll be able to handle a few warriors at once.” I swallowed hard, excitement and nerves mixing in my chest. “I’ll be ready.” Joey clapped me on the shoulder. “I know you will, Luna. Now get some rest you’ll need it for tomorrow.” I and Joey walked back to my quarters, feeling a spark of determination burning brighter than ever. The pack had doubted me, Levi had doubted me, but I wasn’t the same girl who had stumbled onto the training grounds just a week ago. I was Luna. And I was learning how to fight. "Hey Babe, I heard you were training with Joey". Devon pulls me in for a hug as we get to the living room. I missed him so much, I hug him tight. "I missed you too Addy. Would you like to eat something, since you're training with Joey it'll help build up your strength and muscles". I nod my head against his chest. I'm so tired I don't think I can talk. I didn't think training would take much out of me, but I'm aching everywhere. As we sit on the kitchen stool waiting for Bella and Tori to get us lunch Devon picks up my leg and starts massaging. while looking at me with those his silver gray eyes filled with so much love. I couldn't be more grateful that he doesn't have blue eyes. Although I didn't hate Joey's eyes. Talking of Joey she's really a master of stealth, I didn't even notice she'd left. She needs to teach me that. I'll tell her tomorrow. "How do you always know what I want, before I say it. you're hands are magical". my head falls back and I groan at the relief. "I'm you're mate Addy, it's my job". He looks at me with a smile on his face. running his strong hands in circular motions on my leg. not too hard or too soft. he put the right amount of pressure and it feels really good. "Please don't stop, no matter what". "What did you guys talk about at the meeting". it's been bugging me, I need to know if what Joey said was true. Since I've decided to be better and more confident in myself I didn't need my insecurities getting in the way of my growth.
