Chapter 44

The whispers hadn’t stopped since the fight. It's like they had nothing better to do than whisper and gossip about me. Every time I walked through the halls of the pack house or crossed the training grounds I heard them. Low voices, laughter that wasn’t really laughter, there was mockery to it than happiness. Words meant to cut me down where Devon couldn’t hear. It hurt, but what hurt more was how no one defended me. Not one person reminded them that I was their Luna. They stood by, some even joining in. I sat curled on the couch in our room, staring at my hands. They didn’t look like hands that could nearly kill someone, but I could still remember the fire that surged through me when that girl challenged me. It had felt endless. Devon came in and shut the door behind him harder than necessary. His jaw was tight, his eyes darker than usual. “They’re not loyal,” he said flatly. I looked up, startled. “What?” “The pack. They don’t treat you like their Luna. They don’t even treat you like one of their own. And it doesn’t feel natural.” I shifted uncomfortably, not knowing what to say. He crossed the room and knelt in front of me, taking my hands into his much larger ones. His grip was firm, grounding me. “I’ve been listening, Addy. The way they talk. It’s too easy, too… poisoned. Someone is feeding it. Someone wants them against you.” A shiver ran down my spine. “You think it’s witchcraft?” His eyes searched mine, serious. “It would make sense. If a witch wanted to break us apart, she wouldn’t need to fight us directly. All she’d need to do is twist the pack against you until I had no choice but to stand alone with you. That’s the wedge.” My chest tightened. “And what if it works? What if they never accept me?” He leaned closer, his voice low and rough. “Then to hell with them. You’re mine. You’ve always been mine.” Something about the way he said it snapped the heaviness in the room. My pulse raced, heat coiling low in my stomach. I reached up and touched his face, tracing the hard line of his jaw. His breath hitched and his eyes darkened even more. Before I could second-guess it, I pulled him to me. His mouth crashed onto mine, all teeth and heat and hunger. I felt his hands gripping my thighs, dragging me onto his lap like he couldn’t bear to have me even an inch away. I gasped when his lips moved to my neck, sucking hard enough to leave marks. My hands tangled in his hair, yanking him closer as if I could fuse us together. His growl vibrated against my skin, and I felt it in my bones. “Devon,” I whispered, my voice breaking. He lifted me effortlessly, carrying me to the bed. Clothes tore away in seconds, his hands everywhere, rough and desperate. My back arched when his mouth closed around my breast, heat flooding me until I thought I might explode. “Say it,” he growled against my skin. “I’m yours,” I gasped, clutching at his shoulders, nails raking down his back. His mouth devoured mine again, his tongue claiming me just as much as his body was about to. When he pushed inside me I cried out, clutching him tighter, fire spreading through my veins so fast I almost screamed. But Devon didn’t flinch. He groaned, his movements deep and steady, as if the fire only drove him harder. Sparks danced along my skin where he touched me, glowing faintly in the dark room. “Addy,” he rasped, his forehead pressed to mine. “You’re burning.” “I can’t stop it,” I gasped, my body trembling. “Don’t,” he growled. “Burn for me.” His words shattered me. The fire surged higher, but it didn’t hurt. It wrapped around us, licking over his skin, searing through me until every thrust left me shaking apart. He didn’t let go, didn’t pull away even when blue fire flickered across my arms. He took everything I gave, every scream, every clawing touch, every desperate cry of his name. His body drove into mine until the fire burst, dragging me over the edge with a violent cry that left me shaking in his arms. He followed right after, growling into my neck as his body locked with mine, both of us trembling, wrapped in the glow of flames that should have destroyed him but didn’t. When the fire finally faded I collapsed against him, breathless, my skin still tingling with sparks. He stroked my hair, whispering something low and soothing against my ear. After a long silence, I whispered, “We can’t let anyone know.” His chest rumbled under my cheek. “They already hate you for no reason. If they see this, they’ll think you’re cursed.” “Joey can know,” I murmured. “No one else.” “Agreed.” He tilted my chin up, kissing me softer this time, almost reverent. “But never doubt this, Addy. Whatever you are, whatever this is… you’re mine. And I’ll burn with you if I have to.” I closed my eyes, letting myself believe him, even though deep down I knew the pack wasn’t the only danger waiting for us.
