Chapter 9

Devon’s arm tightened instantly around my waist, pulling me closer, his warmth a shield I desperately clung to. “Devon,” Scar said, voice clipped, each syllable laced with suspicion. “Why is she still here?” My breath hitched. Not again… please, not again. Devon’s aura pulsed before he even spoke, a quiet growl rumbling deep in his chest as his dominance filled the air. “Levi, you know Adriana is my mate. She belongs by my side.” Scar’s gaze flicked to me, sharp and accusing, as if I was some intruder who had fooled his Alpha. My chest tightened until it hurt. What if he convinced Devon I wasn’t worth this? What if I was dragged back into the darkness? I tried to speak, to defend myself, but the words withered in my throat. “She’s dangerous,” Scar pressed, his voice rising. “You weren’t there when she—” “That’s enough.” Devon’s voice cut like steel. He bared his teeth, his Alpha command rippling through the room. “I don’t want to hear another word against her.” Scar froze, lips pressed thin, though his eyes still burned with distrust. I clutched Devon’s shirt, torn between relief and disbelief. Why does he believe in me when I can’t even believe in myself? I don't want to think about what could happen to me if Levi actually finds something about me. will I be locked up in that dungeon again?. Levi leaves the room angrily but not without giving me a scathing look. I don't know what he thinks I did, or what happened when he found me because I was completely out of it but whatever it is, is reason enough for him to hate me. Could Devon actually be taking a risk by siding with me instead of his Beta. "Babe, don't worry yourself about him, okay", I don't know why he stood up for me like that, but I'm so grateful. It makes me feel like I'm falling in love with him, no mate bond in play. "Look Levi has always been the cautious one and very suspicious. when he finds out how sweet and lovely you are, he'll apologize for all the accusations ". "And I promise to talk to him, okay". "I trust you, but you don't know me really well, what if he was saying the truth and I'm some evil maniac here to destroy your pack ". he bursts into a fit of laughter. I'd never known that laughter sounded like sunlight until now. "Baby, my sweet sweet Addy. you could not even finish one sandwich. how are you going to destroy a whole pack of highly trained warriors and strategists. I bet you can't even throw a punch". I've never been teased by anyone playfully, it's usually full blown insults. but I like this. "I can throw a punch". I fist my palm and try to punch him but I didn't even get his chest. "I guess I can't even throw a punch, when you're not even trying to block it". "You know we could go to the training grounds tomorrow. anything you want to learn, I'll teach you." My eyes lit up with excitement and I clap my hands together, jumping up and down in joy. "Really? I wasn't allowed to train in my old pack because I didn't have a wolf. are you sure it's okay to train me ". "Addy, I'm the Alpha. I can do whatever I want". I practically climb his body like a tree and hug him. planting kisses all over his face. he growls and his grip on my hips tighten. "Maybe we can do some other training activity now, in our bedroom ". he purrs licking my neck. I yawn and he laughs. "Or maybe we can just go to sleep, you look exhausted and you'll need your energy if you're going to train tomorrow ". I mutter an "ok" but I'm already gone or almost because I hear ruffling and feel him helping me out of my clothes. so that I can sleep comfortably, he helps me put on his shirt. I'm not waking up to water being thrown on me or the rose whip greeting me or even a nasty voice. no, I'm woken up today by the delicious scent of breakfast being brought into my room by Tori. "Morning Luna, how was your night?" "Great, thank you". " This is your breakfast. Alpha ordered me to bring it up for you. Would you love to eat it now or freshen up first". My stomach growled and grumbled at that and Tori laughed. "I guess you'll have your breakfast first. enjoy". Just before she left, like she'd forgotten something she turned around and said. "Oh and the Alpha is at the training grounds so after your meal you can meet him there". "Thanks Tori ". The meal was delicious. bacon and eggs. but it's such a shame it went down the toilet. I overate which made me feel sick. I got dressed and went down to meet my mate. but on my way down I ran into scar. Why can't I get a break. "Umm hello ". "I know you're hiding something from Devon, I'm going to find out about it and trust me when I do he'll be all but happy to throw you to the side off with the rogues, where you belong". He sneered at me while saying this. I don't really know what gave him the impression that I'm hiding something. I just want to be happy and loved and I'm not going to let anything or anyone get in the way of that. The only way to do that is to slowly kill him with kindness, then he'll probably realise that I'm not as evil as he thinks. "I'm really not hiding anything from Devon. but I'm happy to see that there's someone who cares about him". "Well if you have nothing else to threaten me about, I'm heading to the training grounds to learn how to fight, would you love to come watch me?" I ask him, hoping he'll say no because staying around him gives me the shivers. But he's looking at me like I just said something surprising, he shakes his head. But before leaving he says "Just know that I'm watching you. everyone here may think you're nice and innocent but I can see right through it". He turns and leaves. I shake my head and try to put the encounter behind me. I should be happy because I'm about to spend the rest of the day with my lovely mate. "There she is". Three she-wolves closed in, lips curled back, eyes blazing with hatred. Their growls vibrated through my bones, pressing me against the cold wall. My throat went dry. Where was Devon?
