Chapter 41

775 Words
Kyle’s face hovered in the darkness, eyes glowing like embers, lips curling with that same cruel smirk I hated. His voice slithered through the shadows, whispering my name, calling me closer. The world around me burned, flames licking at my skin until I gasped and tried to run but the fire followed, swallowing me whole. I jolted awake, drenched in sweat, breath ragged as if I’d truly been running. My chest heaved, and for a moment I didn’t know where I was until strong arms pulled me against a familiar chest. “Shh,” Devon murmured, his lips brushing the crown of my head. “You’re safe, Addy. I’ve got you.” I buried my face into him, trembling. His heartbeat was steady, grounding me, but Kyle’s voice still echoed in my head. “It felt so real,” I whispered. “Like he was here.” Devon tightened his hold, jaw hard against my temple. “It was a nightmare. Nothing more.” But his tone carried the edge of a man who didn’t quite believe his own words. The morning light came too quickly, though the heaviness in my chest never left. I followed Devon to the council room where he said a matter needed his attention. What I didn’t expect was to find another man already waiting there. He was tall, broad-shouldered, his presence sharp and cold like the edge of a blade. His eyes so much like Devon’s but lacking warmth settled on me with curiosity before sliding back to Devon. “Brother,” the man said, his voice smooth, controlled, dangerous in its calm. Devon stiffened beside me. “Elias.” My stomach dropped. His brother. “I see the rumors were true,” Elias continued, his gaze flicking to me again. “Our wandering Alpha has found himself a mate.” He said it as though it were a crime. “This isn’t your concern,” Devon growled, stepping slightly in front of me. “Oh, but it is.” Elias clasped his hands behind his back, his movements precise. “You’ve complicated things, Devon. For years, Father believed you dead. Your absence gave the throne stability. But now…” His eyes landed on me, sharp and assessing. “Now, you threaten to bring chaos and an uprising. An heir born of this union would challenge my claim. And I cannot allow that.” The air in the room turned suffocating. My hands clenched at my sides as his words sank in. “You know where he is,” I whispered, the question slipping before I could stop it. “I thought Devon said” “That he was hiding?” Elias’s lips twitched, the ghost of a smirk. “You underestimate our father. He knows everything, eventually. The only reason Devon still breathes is because the elders begged for mercy when he resurfaced. Without them, he’d have been silenced long ago.” I turned to Devon, my chest tightening. He met my gaze, guilt flickering in his eyes before he looked away. “It’s true,” he said quietly. “The elders saved me. Otherwise…” He didn’t finish. Elias stepped closer, his calmness more terrifying than rage. “Consider this a warning, brother. Keep your mate close. Do not think for a moment that love will shield you from what’s coming. The throne is mine, and I will not let a girl or a bastard child undo that.” Devon moved before I could blink, his Alpha presence filling the room. His voice was low, lethal. “If you ever threaten her again, Elias, I will forget that we share blood.” For the first time, Elias’s composure wavered, his jaw ticking, though his smirk returned quickly. “Careful, Devon. One wrong move, and you’ll have more than me to contend with.” He left as silently as he had come, the echo of his footsteps leaving a cold weight behind. I exhaled shakily, my hands trembling. “He’s going to come back, isn’t he?” “Yes.” Devon’s eyes hardened. “But he won’t touch you. I won’t let him.” He cupped my face, his thumb brushing my cheek. “We keep this between us. No one can know what Elias said. Not the council. Not the pack. Not yet.” I nodded, though unease coiled in my chest. We thought we were alone in that room. But as Devon pulled me close, I didn’t notice the faint creak of the door down the hall, nor the shadow that slipped away. Someone had seen. Someone would tell. And our secret was already being exposed.
