Chapter 82

The morning light was soft, spilling through the curtains in golden strips. I rested against Devon, my head tucked under his chin, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. Even after everything that had happened, that moment felt sacred. It felt like nothing could touch us here. “Good morning,” he murmured, voice rough with sleep but gentle. I lifted my head slightly and smiled, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. “Morning, you.” He tightened his arms around me, pulling me closer. “You slept well?” “I think so,” I whispered, leaning into him. “But it felt too short.” He chuckled low, the sound vibrating against my chest. “Yeah, mornings with you always feel too short.” His hand stroked the back of my neck, and I shivered. “You’re warm,” he said, almost to himself. “Too warm. It’s distracting.” I laughed softly, nuzzling into him. “Good,” I teased. “I like distracting you.” His grin was lazy but dangerous, that look that always made my pulse race. “I don’t think you understand how much I need you.” I traced my fingers along his jawline. “And I need you,” I said, leaning forward to kiss him. Slowly at first, tasting the morning warmth, then deeper, harder, letting the kiss build into something urgent and claiming. My hands tangled in his hair, and I could feel the heat of him pressing into me. “You’re mine,” he whispered against my lips, and I trembled. “Yes,” I breathed. “All yours.” Every touch, every brush of skin, sent sparks through me. My body responded without hesitation. Even the thought of his hands roaming over me sent shivers down my spine. Devon’s lips moved from mine to my neck, and I gasped, pressing into him. “Addy,” he growled low in his throat. “Do you have any idea what you do to me?” I laughed softly against his chest, then pressed myself closer. “Maybe I like knowing.” His hands moved deliberately, tracing curves and lines as if memorizing me. I wrapped my legs around him, holding him tightly, refusing to let him pull away. His eyes darkened, and I felt that familiar surge of heat, the one that always made my heart race faster than anything else. “You’re too much,” he muttered, his voice hoarse. “I can’t handle it.” “I don’t want you to,” I whispered back, pushing him closer, feeling bold in a way I hadn’t been before. We moved together in that perfect rhythm, soft moans mixing with our whispered confessions. Every moment felt electric, like the world outside didn’t exist. Even the tiny noises of the house couldn’t reach us. “Addy,” he said, pausing to catch his breath, “I love you. Every part of you. Even when I can’t believe how lucky I am to have you.” “I love you too,” I whispered. “More than I’ve ever loved anyone.” He smiled, brushing his thumb over my cheek. “I’m never letting you go.” I buried my face into his chest, listening to the steady thrum of his heartbeat. I felt safe here, stronger than I had in years. Yet, a tiny thread of unease tugged at me. Even in this perfect calm, I couldn’t stop the whisper that told me happiness like this was fragile. A soft knock at the door broke the spell. Joey. I groaned softly, trying to hide my flushed face. “Do we have to answer that?” Devon laughed low in amusement. “Let’s see what she wants.” Joey’s teasing voice echoed through the door. “Breakfast is ready, lovebirds. Don’t make me drag you out myself.” I giggled, covering my face. “She’s relentless.” Devon chuckled and kissed my temple. “We’ll survive her. Maybe.” I followed him out of the bed, still wrapped in his arms, feeling the lingering warmth of him on my skin. Even with Joey’s interruption, the feeling of being safe and wanted stayed with me. I rested my head against his shoulder as we walked, letting myself enjoy the simple closeness. “You know,” I said softly, “I’ve never felt this… cared for before. Not like this.” His hand tightened around mine. “You deserve it, Addy. You deserve all of it. Every smile, every touch, every morning like this.” I smiled against his chest. “I think… I’m starting to believe it. That maybe I can be happy without worrying all the time.” He tilted my chin up, his thumb brushing over my lips. “You can. You will. And I’ll be here, every step of the way.” We stayed together in the soft morning light, moving slowly, letting the quiet intimacy fill the room. My fingers traced the muscles of his arms, memorizing him in a way I never wanted to forget. His lips found mine again, soft and demanding, as if reminding me that this closeness was ours alone. Every kiss, every caress, built the bond between us. There was no need for words beyond our whispers and murmurs. The connection was deeper than physical; it was something raw and endless. I shifted slightly against him, feeling a rush of warmth coil in my belly. “Devon…” I breathed. “Yes?” His lips hovered near mine. “I’m scared,” I admitted, the words spilling out. “Of… everything. Of being this happy, of losing it, of… the baby.” He drew me closer, holding me tightly. “Shh. It’s okay. I know you’re scared. But I’m here. And we’ll face everything together.” His hands moved over me, grounding me, reminding me that I wasn’t alone. Every heartbeat, every breath, every whisper of his voice made the fear fade, even if just a little. We lingered there for hours, tangled together, speaking in soft, murmured confessions. Every gentle touch, every teasing smile, every soft laugh added to the bond we were building. It wasn’t just love—it was trust, connection, and a sense of safety I hadn’t known in years. Eventually, the day grew brighter, the sun climbing higher in the sky. I rested my head against his chest again, letting myself simply be. No pack politics, no threats, no past pains. Just Devon. “And tomorrow,” I whispered, “can we stay like this too?” He smiled, pressing a soft kiss to my forehead. “Every day, Addy. Every single day. I promise.” I closed my eyes, letting the warmth of him and the quiet of the morning fill me. For now, that was enough. For now, we had each other, and I clung to that with everything I had. Because I knew… the storm would come again. But for today, for this morning, I could breathe. I could rest. I could love and be loved without fear. And that was worth everything.
