Chapter 78

The chaos outside the gates hit us like a storm. Warriors clashed with rogue fighters, the sound of snarls, shouts, and spells ricocheting against the walls of our keep. My heart pounded in my chest, each beat a frantic drum, but I forced myself to focus, gripping Devon’s arm as we stepped into the fray. “Stay close!” Devon shouted over the noise, eyes blazing with elemental energy, the air around his fists shimmering with power. “I’ve got you.” I nodded, feeling the heat of our bond, the fire of my own abilities simmering under my skin. Even in human form, I could sense the power within me, and with Devon beside me, it felt like we were one. My fear of the past the miscarriages, the betrayal, the loss flickered like a shadow, but I pushed it down. Right now, there was only the fight. Only survival. Levi’s voice cut through the chaos, sharp and commanding. “Take them down! Kill the Alpha and the witch’s pets!” I could see him now, striding forward, his face twisted in rage. Around him, the rogues surged like a wave, but Devon’s warriors met them head-on. Some shifted into their wolf forms, muscles rippling and fangs bared, while others stayed human, blending speed and strategy with raw strength. The coordination was remarkable; they were strong, disciplined, and loyal. For a moment, I allowed myself to admire them until my gaze snapped back to the real danger. Patricia. She hovered above the battlefield, her form gliding like a phantom. Her hands glowed with dark energy, tendrils of magic curling outward, aimed at our pack. The sight of her made my stomach clench with both fear and fury. She had been the architect of so much suffering before, poisoning the minds of my pack and turning them against me. And now she was here, standing beside Levi, as though the past had come alive in the present. “Luna! Alpha! Watch her!” one of the warriors yelled, as Patricia sent a bolt of dark energy toward them. Devon’s hand shot out, a shield of elemental energy erupting just in time to deflect the attack. “Go! Don’t let her touch anyone else!” he commanded, and I felt the weight of urgency in his voice. I inhaled sharply, the fire inside me reacting instinctively. My hands glowed with heat as I launched my own energy toward Patricia, but she blocked it effortlessly, her laughter ringing cruel and high-pitched. I gritted my teeth. This wasn’t a normal fight; this was a battle of wills, of raw power, and I had to push myself beyond my limits. “Addy, together!” Devon shouted, and I realized what he meant. We couldn’t fight her separately. Our powers had to combine. I moved closer, letting the bond between us pulse, the energy of our connection flaring like a living thing. Our hands met, and the air around us ignited not literally, but with the pressure of power, like a magnetic field so strong it bent reality. Patricia’s eyes widened slightly, the first crack in her confident mask. “You think you can challenge me?” she hissed, voice like ice against steel. “You’re nothing.” I swallowed, fear still lingering at the edges, but I refused to let it dominate me. “I am her mate,” Devon said, voice steady and unwavering. “And I will protect her.” The power surged outward from him, a mix of elements I could barely comprehend, but I felt it coiling around us, binding with my own fire. Together, we struck Patricia’s defenses, forcing her to retreat slightly, and for the first time, I saw hesitation in her movements. Levi, seeing his partner falter, roared in frustration and charged toward our warriors. His strength was formidable, but our pack held firm. Some wolves lunged, teeth bared, others intercepted him with weapons, while still others stayed back, using strategy and agility to corner him. Devon and I didn’t need to shift; our powers in human form were enough to hold him at bay, sending him stumbling with blasts of elemental energy. I felt the adrenaline surge through me, my heartbeat syncing with Devon’s. The bond between us felt stronger than ever. We moved as one, attacking and defending, predicting each other’s moves almost instinctively. And yet, my mind couldn’t ignore the weight of our reality this wasn’t a game. Levi’s intent to kill was clear, and Patricia’s magic was insidious. One misstep could cost lives, including my own, and the life of the child growing inside me. “Addy, focus!” Devon snapped, grabbing my shoulders as another wave of energy from Patricia neared. I nodded, centering myself, and allowed my fire to pulse outward. It flared brightly for a moment, licking around us without burning anything except for the dark tendrils Patricia sent our way, which hissed and dissipated as they met my power. I realized then that my fire had grown stronger. It wasn’t just raw energy anymore; it was controlled, focused. I could wield it without harming the ground beneath my feet, without harming anyone near me, except our enemies. The thought gave me hope, but I didn’t let it distract me. There was still work to do. Levi’s rogues were still relentless, but Devon’s warriors, seasoned and strong, pushed back with skill and coordination. I marveled at their strength, even as my eyes stayed locked on Patricia. The witch’s spells were relentless, but together, Devon and I matched her at every turn, our powers intertwining in a dazzling display. “Now!” Devon yelled, and I understood immediately. We had to combine our strongest attacks, a coordinated strike that would break her defenses completely. I took a deep breath, feeling my fire simmer, coiling like a living thing ready to leap. Devon’s hands glowed with a kaleidoscope of elemental colors, and as our powers met, the combined force erupted toward Patricia. The witch screamed, a high, piercing sound, as the energy struck her. She faltered, stumbled, and for the first time, I saw fear flash in her eyes. Levi roared in fury beside her, but our pack, now emboldened, surged forward, overwhelming the rogues and driving them back toward the borders. Some wolves shifted fully into their forms, cutting off retreat paths, while others used brute force and strategy to corral the enemies. Even with the chaos around me, I stayed tethered to Devon, feeling the bond pulse stronger with every second. This wasn’t just a fight for survival anymore; it was a statement. Patricia and Levi could try to destroy us, try to poison the pack, but they couldn’t break what we had. Our bond, our connection, was stronger than any magic or malice they could wield. Finally, with one last coordinated strike, Patricia and Levi were forced back. She screamed, rage and fear mingling as she vanished in a swirl of dark energy, Levi snarling beside her before he, too, retreated. The battlefield fell into uneasy silence. I sank to my knees, exhausted, hands pressed against Devon’s chest. “Is it… over?” I asked, voice trembling from relief and lingering adrenaline. Devon knelt beside me, wrapping me in a protective embrace. “For now,” he said, voice calm but firm. “They won’t be back so easily. And our pack… our warriors held their ground. We’re stronger than they realized.” I let my forehead rest against him, feeling the pulse of his power, the heat of his presence. “I couldn’t have done it without you,” I whispered. “You never will have to,” he replied, pressing a kiss to the top of my head. “I’ll always be here. And so will our child.” Even as I felt the weight of exhaustion settle over me, I knew this was a turning point. The pack had seen our strength. Patricia had seen it. Levi had seen it. And most importantly, I had seen it in myself. We stood together, side by side, human but powerful, a bond forged through fire, trust, and love. And for the first time in a long time, I allowed myself to believe… that we could survive anything. But deep in my chest, I couldn’t ignore the lingering feeling of unease. Patricia had retreated, but she was clever. Levi had been driven back, but he was cunning. And I knew, instinctively, that this battle was just the beginning. Yet for now, as Devon held me and our pack rallied around us, I allowed a small, fragile smile to break through. For now, we had won. For now, we were safe. And for now… we were together.
