Chapter 69

The first thing I felt when I stirred awake wasn’t the sun filtering through the curtains or the cool sheet tangled at my waist. It was him. Devon’s heat pressed into my back, his arm banded tight around my middle, his breath warm against my neck. My body ached in all the best ways, yet the bond tugged at me, restless and demanding, as if the night hadn’t been enough. I let out a soft sigh, trying to shift carefully, but the movement made him grunt low in his chest. His lips brushed the sensitive spot below my ear. “Already awake, little flame?” His voice was rough, sleep-thick and hungry, and it sent a shiver straight down my spine. “Couldn’t sleep,” I whispered, though the truth was I didn’t want to. Not with him this close. Not when every inch of me burned for him still. His hand slid down my stomach, slow and teasing, making my breath catch. “Good,” he murmured. “Because I’m not done with you.” Before I could answer, he rolled me onto my back, covering me with his weight. The mattress dipped beneath us, and the sight of his golden eyes flickering in the morning light made my chest tighten. He kissed me hard, no gentle build-up this time, just heat and possession. I arched into him, my nails dragging down his back, desperate to match him. Fire sparked at my fingertips. Literal sparks, tiny embers that hissed against the sheets. I gasped and tried to pull back, but Devon caught my wrists and pinned them above my head, grinning down at me like the fire didn’t scare him at all. “Don’t hide it, Addy,” he growled, rocking against me, his hips grinding into mine. “Your fire is mine too. Let it out.” My body obeyed before my mind did. The flames licked across my skin, harmless but blazing, wrapping us both in heat. Devon groaned, thrusting into me hard enough to steal my breath. His mouth claimed mine again, tongue sliding deep, tasting me, owning me. The bond thrummed, wild and intoxicating, and I matched him move for move. No hesitation, no fear. Only us raw, and desperate. He shifted suddenly, pulling me onto his lap so I straddled him. The motion forced me down around him, and I cried out, clutching his shoulders. Devon’s hands gripped my hips, guiding me as I rode him, his eyes locked on mine, molten and unyielding. “Look at you,” he rasped, firelight flickering in his gaze. “My Luna. My mate. My flame.” Each word sank deep, fueling me. I moved faster, harder, my body trembling with the need to consume and be consumed. The fire inside me flared until I thought it would tear me apart, but Devon held me steady, his lips crushing mine, his body taking every ounce of it. When release finally ripped through me, it came with a burst of flame that danced across his skin. But he didn’t flinch. He didn’t pull away. He wrapped his arms around me, holding me through it, his own growl vibrating against my chest as he followed me over the edge. We collapsed together, tangled in heat and sweat, our breaths ragged. My head rested against his shoulder, my body still pulsing with the aftermath, but it wasn’t enough. It never was with him. He must have felt the same, because his hand slid down my back again, urging me to stay close. “Still hungry?” he asked with a wicked tilt of his lips. I laughed breathlessly, nipping at his jaw. “You already know the answer.” And just like that, we were moving again slower this time, but no less intense. His hands explored every inch of me, worshipful and greedy all at once, while I traced the lines of his body with fire-kissed fingertips. The bond tangled us tighter, a constant hum under my skin, until I couldn’t tell where I ended and he began. We lost track of time, of the morning, of everything except each other. The outside world didn’t matter. Not the whispers, not the threats, not the ghosts of the past. Only him. Only us. But as the rhythm softened, as we finally stilled and he pressed soft kisses along my shoulder, a strange weight settled in my chest. I tried to push it away, but the unease lingered, dark and unshakable. Devon pulled back to study me, his thumb brushing my cheek. “What is it?” I forced a smile, not wanting to break the moment. “Nothing. Just… tired.” He didn’t look convinced, but he kissed my forehead and pulled me against him anyway. “Rest, flame. I’ll protect you.” I closed my eyes, burying my face in his chest, but the knot in my stomach only tightened. Because for the first time since finding happiness here, I couldn’t shake the feeling that it wouldn’t last. That something or someone was waiting in the shadows, ready to take it away. And no amount of fire could stop the chill that ran through me.
