Addy’s heart was hammering in her chest as she ran alongside Joey, the corridors of the pack’s stronghold stretching ahead like a maze. Every step echoed against the stone walls, the urgency of their mission driving them forward. She could feel the baby inside her stirring with her rapid movements, but there was no time to slow down. She had to reach the safe room; she had to be sure both of them were out of immediate danger.
Joey’s hand was firmly around hers, steadying her as she almost tripped over the uneven floor. “We’re almost there,” Joey whispered, her voice taut but controlled. “Just a little further, Addy. Keep moving.”
Addy nodded, though her lungs burned and her legs ached. She didn’t care. She wouldn’t let fear slow her down. Not now. Not when everything she loved was at stake.
Then a shadow moved at the edge of her vision, faster than it should have been. She spun, heart in her throat, just in time to see Elias emerge from a side hallway, his eyes blazing with fury and dark intent. Addy froze for a split second, and that was all it took.
Before she could react, strong hands grabbed her from behind. She twisted violently, kicking and screaming, but Elias's grip was unyielding. “No!” she shouted, trying to wrench herself free. “Let me go! Joey!”
Joey lunged, but another figure moved in front of her, a cruel smirk on Patricia’s face. The witch had come. Addy’s stomach dropped. Her instincts screamed at her, but the baby’s safety, her own survival, and the thought of Devon’s face flashed before her mind like fire. She had to fight, even if it meant risking everything.
“You won’t win, Addy,” Elias snarled, his voice low and dangerous. “This is the end for you, for her, and for everything you think you have.”
Addy’s hands flared as she dug deep, calling on the power within her the fire that had always been her hidden strength. Flames danced around her fingertips, small but burning with intent. She lashed out, forcing Elias back a step. He hissed, momentarily taken aback.
“You’re not taking me without a fight,” she growled, her voice trembling with both fear and fury. She could feel her wolf stirring inside, a heat that almost singed the air around her. Her eyes glowed faintly in the dim light of the corridor, and Kael took another cautious step backward.
Joey struggled against Patricia, her face twisted with anger and desperation. Addy knew she couldn’t help her right now; she had to survive for both of them. She could hear Devon behind them, rushing down the corridor, but Patricia’s hand was already on him, holding him back with a force he couldn’t push past.
“No!” Devon shouted, panic lacing his voice. He surged forward, breaking free just enough to see Addy fighting for her life. Her fire flared brighter, the heat making his chest tighten. He saw the determination, the raw strength, and the fear all mixed in her expression, and he felt it as if it were his own.
Addy ducked under Elias's arm and swung her fist back, flames licking at his skin, causing him to stagger. Her wolf instincts surged sharp, fast, relentless but she kept control, focused on survival. She couldn’t shift fully; her pregnancy made her body sensitive, vulnerable, but she refused to show weakness. Not to him. Not to anyone.
Elias recovered, growling, and lunged, aiming to grab her around the waist again. Addy twisted and screamed, slamming her hand into his chest. The fire burst outward, brushing against his armor and clothes, making him yelp in frustration. “You can’t control it,” he spat. “You’re weak, Addy. You’ll never be strong enough to stop me.”
Addy’s teeth gritted. “You’ll never win. I’m not weak!”
She swung again, fire sparking from her hands. The corridor felt like it was closing in, the heat radiating from her making even the walls shimmer. Elias flinched as a rogue behind him got too close, forcing him to focus on his surroundings.
Behind her, Devon struggled against Patricia, whose dark energy pulsed like a living thing. She laughed softly, cruel and measured, her eyes taking in Addy’s fire. “You’re impressive, little Luna,” Patricia said, her voice smooth but threatening. “But you won’t survive this. Not tonight.”
Addy’s legs moved faster than she thought possible, ducking, weaving, throwing small bursts of fire at the walls, the floor, anywhere that might slow Elias down. She could hear Joey groaning behind her, Patricia’s magic pressing against her like a weight, but she kept moving, kept fighting.
Then Devon broke free, rushing toward her, his arms outstretched. “Addy!” he shouted. “Hold on! I’m coming!”
She met his eyes for just a second, relief flashing in her chest, and then Elias yanked her upward, carrying her off her feet. Addy flailed, fire sparking from her hands as she tried to push against him. “Devon!” she screamed, tears stinging her eyes. “I’m not giving up!”
Devon surged forward, but Patricia’s presence stopped him, her hands glowing with dark energy that forced him to halt. He growled, frustration and fear twisting inside him. “I will not let you hurt her,” he said, his voice low and lethal, every element he controlled humming just beneath his skin, ready to burst.
Elias's grip tightened on Addy, but she refused to scream. Instead, she bared her teeth and swung again, a small flame lashing against him. He grunted in annoyance, but there was a flicker of unease in his eyes. Addy’s fire, her determination, her will to protect her baby and herself—he hadn’t expected it.
“Let me go, Elias!” she shouted. “You’ll regret this!”
And at that moment, Devon broke through the remaining energy Patricia had layered around him. He surged toward Elias, hands glowing with elemental fire, water, wind, and earth ready to fight. His presence alone made Kael falter, and Addy saw the opening.
With a powerful kick, she pushed Elias backward, using every ounce of her strength. Devon grabbed her, holding her close to shield her from Patricia’s next move. “I’ve got you,” he whispered, his lips brushing her hair as he held her tight. “I will never let you go. You hear me?”
Addy’s heart thundered in her chest, the heat from her fire blending with the warmth of Devon’s presence. She nodded, unable to speak, and let him guide her to safety. Her fire simmered, still hot, still dangerous, but for the first time, she felt a strange calm. Devon was there, always there, and together they could face anything even Elias, even Patricia, even the darkness threatening their world.
But even as they retreated, Addy’s heart thudded with unease. She could feel Levi’s lingering presence, the witch’s magic like a shadow at the edges of her mind. She knew this wasn’t over. Not by a long shot.
Her fingers dug into Devon’s shirt as he held her close. “We’ll stop them,” he said, reading her worry. “We always do. Together.”
Addy nodded, letting herself believe it for just a moment, letting the heat of her fire mix with the warmth of Devon’s strength. But deep down, a small voice whispered, warning her that the storm wasn’t finished, that the battles were far from over, and that the world would test them in ways they couldn’t yet imagine.
