Chapter 50

668 Words
The air still stank of blood and smoke when dawn broke over the pack lands. Adriana hadn’t slept. She sat at the edge of the bed, her arms wrapped around her knees, watching the horizon glow with pale light. Devon paced behind her, restless and sharp, every muscle in his body wound tight like a bowstring. Neither of them had spoken much since the battle. But they didn’t need to. The silence itself screamed louder than words. The door opened without a knock. Joey stepped in, her face drawn. “Alpha… Luna… the warriors are gathered. They’re demanding answers about last night. And…” She hesitated. “Levi’s at the front.” Adriana’s stomach dropped. Devon’s growl vibrated through the room, low and dangerous. “How dare he.” Together, they went to the training grounds where the pack was assembled. Warriors stood in clusters, murmuring, throwing furtive glances at Adriana. She held her head high, but the weight of their eyes pressed down like stones. And then Levi stepped forward. His posture was calm, too calm, his smile cold. “Alpha,” he said, bowing mockingly. “I see your little pack survived. Barely.” His gaze slid to Adriana, slow and deliberate. “Though I wonder, for how long?” Devon’s voice was thunder. “what do you mean by that , Levi. You're also a part of this pack.” Levi’s smile widened. “I came to offer the truth this pack deserves. These attacks aren’t random. They’re because of her.” He jabbed a finger toward Adriana. “She draws death to us. She’s cursed. Even your warriors saw it, fire spilling from her like a witch. How long before she burns this entire pack to ash?” Murmurs rippled through the crowd, sharp and biting. Adriana’s chest tightened, her breath shallow. Devon stepped forward, his Alpha power slamming into the field. “Enough.” His voice cut like a blade. “No one speaks of my mate like that. Remember you're talking about your Luna." But Levi only laughed, low and cruel. “Always her protector. Always her shield. You can silence their tongues, Alpha, but you can’t silence their fear. And when fear grows…” He spread his arms, mock-innocent. “…it turns to rebellion.” Devon’s eyes darkened, a storm ready to break. “You dare threaten me?” “Its not a threat,” Levi said smoothly. “Its a promise.” Before Devon could move, warriors at the back shouted. Rogues surged from the treeline again, snarling, eyes wild with bloodlust. The pack scrambled into formation, cries of alarm filling the air. But Adriana’s focus snapped to Levi. He wasn’t startled. He wasn’t even pretending. His smile was wide, satisfied, as chaos erupted around them. “Devon!” Adriana screamed. “It’s him, he’s behind this!” Devon spun, fury flashing across his face, but Levi was already backing toward the woods. Rogues shielded his retreat, clawing and snapping to keep the warriors at bay. Devon tore through them like a storm, desperate to reach him, but Levi’s voice rang out over the battlefield before he disappeared into the trees. “You can’t save her, Alpha! She’s mine to destroy. And when I return, I’ll bring war to your door. You won’t stand a chance.” The forest swallowed him, leaving only screams, blood, and the smell of smoke. Adriana stood frozen in the middle of the chaos, her heart hammering so hard it hurt. Levi’s words weren’t just a threat they were a promise. And the pack, already divided, already whispering against her, had heard every word. Devon cut down the last rogue in front of him, his chest heaving as he turned back toward her. His eyes burned with fury, but beneath it she saw fear. Not for himself. For her. She swallowed hard, her legs trembling. Because for the first time since she had come here, she wondered if he could protect her. If anyone could.
