Chapter 18

912 Words
We’ve been curled up together on the bed since the seer left. I think we both had a great shock from meeting her, and we just needed a break. Devon has been holding me, telling himself that I’m not going anywhere. I think the prophecy shook him more than me. “Patricia is gone.” He finally breaks the silence, and I’m glad it’s with good news. He lets out a sigh... “Addy, I’m really sorry I ignored you for her when she arrived. I didn’t think at all. I promise it will never happen again.” No one has ever apologized to me before for anything. I guess I’ll have a lot of firsts with my mate. “It’s okay, Devon. Joey and I actually thought she had the whole pack including you, under a spell.” I’m waiting to see if he’ll blindly defend her or think about it. “Now that you brought it up, I felt off the entire time she was here. But why would she do that? Unless she’s working with someone from the outside to get to our pack.” He’s trying to figure out who’s behind this and why. I can practically hear the wheels turning. “Is there anyone you have in mind?” I’m hoping he will tell me. Since we met, we haven’t shared much with each other about ourselves. “There’s something you have to know about me.” He looks at me lovingly, tracing his thumb along my face. “I’m not who you think I am. I hope when I tell you, you won’t feel different about me.” He looks… scared? “I promise, Devon. I know I haven’t said this, but I love you a lot, and nothing you or anyone else tells me will ever change that.” He has never needed reassurance, but today he does, and I won’t fail him. “I’m the first son of the King and Queen.” My breath hitches. What is he saying? The first son is dead, or at least I thought so. He died while trying to save his mother, who also got killed immediately. “I know what you’re thinking, but everyone was lied to. I was not killed during battle my mother was. She was killed by my father, and when I tried to oppose him, I was exiled from the pack by decision of the elders, in honor of my mother.” He takes a deep breath, like it’s hard for him to continue. “My mother hadn’t told me what she saw the day she died. It was what she saw that sent my father over the edge. But she always told me all her visions. I don’t know why she didn’t tell me this one. My father sent my brother after me, he didn’t want me running my mouth to anyone. That was when my elemental powers came out… I couldn’t kill him, I just left him on the floor bleeding.” He turns to me with tears in his eyes and asks, “What kind of older brother would do that?” His voice cracks, and he breaks down. I never thought I’d have to comfort my mate, because he always seemed so strong, but now I really hope I’m doing my best as I stroke his back and run my hands through his hair, telling him to let it all out. Losing his mother must have hurt him a lot. And losing her to his father must have been much worse. He’s dozed off on my chest. I start thinking of everything he’s just said. I wonder what his mother told his father to have him kill her, although I don’t think anything justifies that. He didn’t tell me how the king covered up his crimes to the council. He must have felt so alone. The only rumors that were spread about the prince described him as an unruly person who wouldn’t be able to lead the wolves, which was why the king crowned the second prince instead of him. This just shows that the king never liked him in the first place. It’s almost dawn. I slept off still thinking of what he said, and I can’t understand why the king would hate his own son so much that he’d want him dead. “Baby, what are you thinking of?” “Nothing.” I don’t want to remind him of his pain. He looks like he knows but won’t push it. “Breakfast?” he asks, leaning forward to kiss me. I grab his hair and deepen the kiss, running my hands all over his chest. He grips my waist tightly, and I wrap my legs around his waist. He groans immediately and tries to pull away, but I hold him closer and keep kissing him. I don’t know why he always stops before we go too far, but I’m not stopping this time. I want to complete the mate bond with him. I don’t know how I got so bold, I guess I am getting better. There’s a knock on the door, and I try to pull away, but this time he stops me. I gently pry my lips from his. “Devon, there’s someone at the door.” “Ignore ’em.” He’s trying to pull me closer for a kiss, but I slip out of the bed before he can get a chance.
