Adriana kept her head down as she walked through the pack grounds the next morning. The whispers weren’t loud, but they cut deep.
“She almost scorched the training field.”
“Luna or not, that wasn’t natural.”
“Fire like that doesn’t belong to wolves.”
"Maybe she's a witch".
Every step felt heavier until she finally escaped to the quiet of She and Devon’s room . She closed the door, pressing her back against it, her chest tight. She couldn't believe that even without an outside influence the pack still talked about her like that.
She didn’t notice him at first until strong arms circled her waist and pulled her against a familiar chest. His scent wrapped around her, grounding her instantly.
“You heard them,” Devon said quietly. It wasn’t a question.
Her throat tightened. “They’re not wrong. I don’t belong here. My powers are not normal for a wolf".
He turned her in his arms, tilting her chin up. “Don’t ever say that. You are my Luna, my mate. If they can’t see it yet, that’s their blindness, not your fault.”
Her lips parted, a protest on the tip of her tongue, but he silenced it with a kiss hard, consuming, like he could burn away every whisper with the press of his mouth on hers.
She melted into him, fingers fisting his shirt, her body desperate for the safety only he gave her. He lifted her effortlessly, carrying her toward the bed. She clung to him, the ache inside her no longer just fear but raw need.
“Devon,” she breathed, her voice breaking as his hands slid beneath her shirt.
He laid her down gently but the way he looked at her wasn’t gentle at all. Hunger burned in his eyes, matched only by the protectiveness in them.
“You need to remember who you are,” he rasped, his lips trailing heat down her neck. “Not what they say.”
Her body arched into his touch as he stripped her bare, his hands were everywhere, claiming, worshiping, grounding. She lost herself in the rhythm of his mouth, the weight of his body, the way he anchored her even as the flames flickered beneath her skin.
When he finally thrust into her, the world narrowed to just them. Each thrust was a promise, each kiss a vow. She clutched at him desperately, whispering his name like it was the only thing keeping her tethered.
The whispers of the pack faded, drowned out by his voice murmuring against her ear. “Mine. Always mine.”
When they collapsed together, breathless and spent, he kept her close. His thumb brushed her cheek, wiping away tears she hadn’t realized had fallen.
“You’re stronger than all of them,” he said softly. “And when the time comes, they’ll see it.”
Adriana buried her face in his chest, her heart aching and steady at the same time. She wanted to believe him. For tonight, wrapped in his arms, she almost did.
