Chapter 47

819 Words
The next morning, I practically dragged myself out of bed even though I hadn’t slept much. Devon kept asking if I was okay, but I just told him I was tired. I didn’t want him worrying more than he already was. Joey met me outside for training again. She kept watching me with that sharp look she gets when she knows I’m not saying everything. But she didn’t push, just made me run until my lungs burned and my legs felt like they would give out. “Come on, Addy,” she yelled. “If you’re going to prove yourself to this pack, you can’t collapse every time it gets tough.” I wanted to snap at her, to tell her I didn’t care about the damn pack anymore, but instead I pushed harder. I wanted to be stronger. I wanted to be the Luna Devon needed me to be. But when training ended, the whispers started again. Louder this time. “She’s not one of us.” “She’s cursed. I don’t want her anywhere near my children.” “I heard she’s a danger to the Alpha himself.” The words cut deeper than the exercises Joey put me through. I clenched my fists so hard my nails dug into my palms. My body started to feel hot, too hot. Joey noticed. She grabbed my arm, her eyes wide. “Addy, breathe. Don’t let it happen again.” I looked down at my hand and saw the faint shimmer of heat dancing across my skin. No flame, not yet, but it scared me enough to yank my arm away and hurry back inside before anyone else noticed. When I reached the hallway near the Alpha’s office, Levi was standing there like he’d been waiting for me. His eyes raked over me, his mouth twisting into that cruel smile I’d come to hate. “Getting cozy with the Alpha won’t save you,” he muttered. His lips tilted up in a sneer like he was disgusted by my mere presence. “You’re weak. The pack sees it, and so do I. You’ll never be their Luna.” My stomach turned, but I forced myself to lift my chin. “I don’t need your approval, Levi.” He took a step closer, lowering his voice. “You almost burned Clara alive. Don’t think I didn’t notice the way you lost control. What happens next time, huh? When you torch half the pack? You’re a danger, and one day everyone will see it.” For a second, I wanted to blast him right there, to show him exactly what I was capable of. My body burned hotter, my skin tingling. But Joey’s warning echoed in my head. Levi smirked when he saw me struggling, like he knew exactly how close I was to snapping. Then he walked away, leaving his words like poison in the air. I stood frozen, my breaths sharp, until Devon came out of his office and found me. He didn’t ask questions, just pulled me into his arms right there in the hall. “What happened?” he whispered into my hair. “Nothing,” I lied, clinging to his shirt. “I’m fine.” He didn’t believe me, I could feel it in the way he held me tighter, like he wanted to protect me from something he couldn’t see. That night, I couldn’t hide it anymore. Devon and I were in bed, and I was staring at the ceiling, still hearing Levi’s voice in my head. He brushed his hand down my arm and stopped when he felt the heat on my skin. “Addy.” His tone was serious now. “You’re burning up again. What aren’t you telling me?” Tears stung my eyes. “I can’t control it. Every time they whisper, every time they look at me like I’m nothing, it builds up inside me. I don’t want to hurt anyone, Devon. But what if I can’t stop it?” He shifted on the bed until he was above me, his eyes locked on mine. “You listen to me. You’re not dangerous. You’re mine. And whatever this is, we’ll figure it out together. Do you hear me?” I nodded, even though fear still twisted in my chest. Devon kissed me like he could take that fear away, slow at first, then deeper, until I was clutching him like he was the only thing holding me to the ground. Maybe he was. When he finally pulled back, he pressed his forehead against mine. “Don’t hide from me again, Addy. I’ll protect you from them, from everything. You just have to let me.” I wanted to believe him so badly. But when I closed my eyes later, I saw Levi’s smirk again, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that he wasn’t just taunting me. He was planning something.
