Chapter 16

524 Words
Devon’s words linger in the air like smoke. A prophecy. The way he says it, quiet and careful, makes my stomach knot. “What did your mother tell you?” My voice is barely a whisper. He runs a hand through his dark hair, his jaw tight. “She used to speak of a chosen wolf. Someone touched by Selene herself. A fire-bearer, powerful enough to protect or destroy everything. She said when the fire first awakens, it feels like burning alive.” My chest tightens. “That’s what I felt.” could it be me? no it's not possible, I'm too weak to be part of such a prophesy. no I have to stop calling myself weak every time if I want to improve. His eyes meet mine, filled with both awe and fear. “Addy… I think it’s you.” The room feels smaller, hotter, though not like before. My body shivers. I’ve always been the weak one, the Luna who couldn’t even stop two wolves from fighting. Me chosen? It sounds impossible. I shake my head. “No. I’m not strong. I can’t even control what’s happening to me.” Devon cups my face, forcing me to look at him. His palms are warm, steady. “Strength isn’t about control. It’s about surviving what others can’t. And you survived fire, Addy.” I don't believe in myself, but he does. How does he believe in me so much, how does he have so much faith in me. His words sink into me like sunlight. For the first time, I wonder if I’ve been wrong about myself. Still, doubt claws at me. “If this prophecy is real… what if it kills me?” His expression softens, his thumb brushing my cheek. “Then I’ll fight fate itself before I let that happen.” My breath catches. The way he says it, it doesn’t sound like a promise. It sounds like a vow. Silence hums between us, heavy with things unspoken. My heart races, but not from fear. His closeness sparks something different—something that feels just as dangerous as fire. I want to melt into him, to forget the pack’s whispers, Patricia’s smirk, Levi’s glare. To just exist in this moment where his eyes are only on me. But before I can, a knock echoes on the door. Devon tenses, pulling back slightly though his hand doesn’t leave mine. “What is it?” he growls. An elder’s voice answers from the other side. “Alpha, the council has gathered. They say it’s urgent.” Devon curses under his breath, then looks at me. “Rest. I’ll be back soon. Don’t open this door for anyone but me.” I nod, but as he leaves, my thoughts churn. Prophecies. Fire. Power. None of it feels real but the burn inside me, the glow of his hands, Joey’s pain… it all happened. When the door closes, I curl against the sheets, trying to calm my racing heart. For the first time since I arrived in this pack, I’m not just scared of being weak. I’m scared of what I might become.
